View Full Version : Plant collision
Scott Harris 07-22-2003, 06:00 PM Hey guys...
I am working on a project where a large asteroid is shashing into a planet and I am looking for refrence... at asteroid is about 1/4th the size of the planet.
anyone know of some links off hand? or some movies that have scenes of this type?
I probley should ask also if anyone knows of some good particle tutorials also...
Thanks guys :hmm:

This is the best bunch of tutorials I know of. BUt I'm not sure if there is what you want there.
It all depends on the speed with which they collide
But basically, if something is 1/4th of a planet and it collides with it there is total devastation. If it hits one side of the planet, it will most likely just shear off a huge chunk of the planet and go spinning off in a new direction. But if you have ever taken a Physics class, remember Newton's Third Law (http://www.abdn.ac.uk/physics/ts1001/run3/tsld012.htm).
The asteroid and the planet will both be spinning off away from each other.
Much like billard balls.

not sure if it's still online but there was a decent asteroid crash video tutorial on gnomon awhile ago: www.gnomononline.com i think the way they do it is the same way i'd go about it and thats using softbody dynamics for the planet and having particles emit on collision.
