I was wondering what you guys thought of Maya's Boolean features - I am reading an article about modelling a guitar in Truespace using Boolean techniques and it made me recall my past experiences with MAYA boolean (polygonal) which was very annoying to use and in certain instances, it won't even do it for whatever odd reasons.

My impression, about five months back was that it was buggy. However, it's not something I read about people complaing about much so I don't know if its just the way I'm using the operations but then, hey, its booleans. Someone said to me that the Maya boolean operation was buggy. Share your thoughts. Is it better in Maya 5?

generally you can make booleans work by matching the normals on both objects and deleting the history... well, reverse that.

if booleans is buggy when doing the operation, then try this.
(in maya 4, 4.5, 5)

1. first check your normals
2. delete hisory

if it still dousnt work

3. do a clean up with out tesseltion and zero uv space

still dont work

4. optimize scene

worked 90% of the times for me

thanks for the response guys. So far so good.

Something for other users to note:

Sometimes, after you create a hole in a polygonal object, booleaning to the hole area will cause errors. The way to kind of fix that is to select the affected faces (where the boolean will occur and triangulate). It should work then.
