View Full Version : How to create perfect water with Softimage XSI (Tutorial)
Heaven871 07-21-2003, 07:57 PM Hi.
After loosing my hair over the beautiful but very cpu eating XSI ocean shader I decided to write my own shader.
This tutorial will show you what it takes to create a nice ocean or lake, how water behaves and surely how to create a shader. With or without displacement.
It renders much faster and will hopefully be some good for you.
Feedback very welcome

Wow  thanks for all these nice replies. You brightened my day :)
Well, PANZER, a swamp is really something else. I'd definetely use Maya for that one.
Grüße nach Ludwigsburg. :wavey: Es gibt hier zwar nicht viele, aber es gibt sie, shapeshifter.
I love XSI but I'd use for anything dynamic Maya.
Would be cool if some of you would post a pic after using my tutorial on their work.
Keep on rendering.

Why? It doesn't really matter which app to use to make it. My thought would be is take Heaven's tutorial, take the 'wave chops' down to none. Add some earth-tone colors to the materials/shaders making it algae looking and then add lots of reeds and roots and stuff. XSI...Maya...max...etc. They can all do it with the right input from the user :p
Hey! Nice tutorial!
I saw your water on the cg talk VFXchallenge. It looks awesome!

You should make more tutorials. You have great technical skills!

Ahhhh .. I tried to quote something but this strange Mac in front of me just does not want to do what I want, give me a PC
Signal to Noise, if I think of a swamp I think of dozens of particles, bubbles, blobs, thingies flying in the air, stuff like that.
And sure, XSI can do this, too. If you run fast enough you can run through a concrete wall :wip: Know what I mean?
Every program can do everything, some can do better, why not use them, don't waste time, create stuff the easiest way.
And why does nearly the whole of germany use 3dsMax, darn? Enough trash talk, great day to all of you.

What kind of toxic dumping have you guys been doing to your swamps over there? Thingies flying in the air? lmao.
edit: btw, great tut there heaven... fun to play with the water...

Don't know about you, but we just use this nifty tool that XSI has... it's called a door. And unlike Maya, you don't have to build the wall first either.

 hihi, okay, tachyOn, I give up. I love running through walls, remember the levis spot odyssey? My favorite, framestoreCfc rules.
I decided to write my diploma about particles. I'll check the XSI particles closely by then :)
And JDex, close your eyes and imagine a place where military warfare was tested for 20 years and you'll get a pretty good impression on where I live. I mean it.
