View Full Version : Brainbugz for Maya 2009 ??
viki164 06-02-2009, 02:00 AM hey folks & coders!
I dunno why often good stuffs are mostly under appreciated or gets faded over the time!
This thing has saved my back when I was asked to do any flocking bird or bees sim over the past few years. but Now it seems from last couple of years the development on this cool plugin is down & there is no update as the author carsten klove is gone missing I guess. He said tht he`ll be adding sum new future enhancement in his next release. but I wonder why this beautiful piece of stuff is not getting any support from Autodesk?
he also published his source code here :
http://www.koders.com/info.aspx?c=ProjectInfo&pid=RRM9FWZUVSQBWWYKM4YK5AWVEC
I request if any of us can be little kind or favourable to the community by compiling this stuff for maya 2009 x64 bit! Would be really helpful & I would highly appreciate it.
thnxs

I believe at some point he went on to develop ALICE at MPC (I think this was mentioned in the Cinefex magazine on Troy), so developing brainbugz further might have been in violation of his contract. Quite a shame indeed, but great to find the source code!
Anyone who is willing go make it work with Maya 2009?
This is the link of this awesome plug-in on highend3d.com

Hi there,
The official place for the source code is here - just check it out via svn
http://code.google.com/p/brainbugz/
Sorry I can't be of help in recompiling it for 2009 or win - I don't have access to 2009 and/or windows atm. But if you find someone who can do it, feel free to send me the recompiled plugins - I'll include them in the highend download.
Btw.: There was/is no problem mainting it just because of me having been part of the dev-team on alice - it really is "only" a time/software availability issue.
Sorry again,
Carsten

when i try start/load plugin i get this error (in 2008 everything works fine)

hmm, that's a funny one ...the only reason I could think of atm why this could possibly fail is that in 2009 an extra attribute was added to the mpxNode class which clashes with the name of the attr that gets added to the node in the initialization of the bbSteeringDesire node.
so, the best way to find out what's going on is to check the return code each time addAttribute is called and throwing a detailed error that includes the attribute in question. after you found the offending attribute, change its long / and or shortname. depending on if that attribute was used in a mel script, this might need changing, too.
Hope this helps!

I thought that shot was more about the foliage dynamics pipeline and animation layers, at least the siggraph paper and the demo said so.
Its a great tool indeed. Quite a bit of fun too watching particles flock and steer and do their own thing.

If you could I'd be really grateful. This plugin looks like something that would be really handy for the current project we're on.

Has anyone had problems on windows xp 64 bit maya 2010? Can't seem to load the plugin "Unable to dynamically load : C:/Program Files/Autodesk/Maya2010/bin/plug-ins/brainbugz.mll"
Thanks!

Also does this work with nparticles?
krisla
01-22-2010, 04:07 PM
yes, experienced this myself, but luckily I have 2009x64 to play with as well. First time I've had an error message in norwegian, tho:) And no, doesen't seem to work with nParticles, but you could always goal your nParticles to the regular ones, I guess..

Thats too bad about the nparticles, however I also have 2009 at hand. Amazing plugin!

@vectorhead:
yeah I too have a problem when I try to load brainbugz.mll I get these following error :
// Error: Unable to dynamically load : C:/Program Files/Autodesk/Maya2010/bin/plug-ins/brainbugz.mll
The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log or use the command-line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail.
So i did little google about sxstrace.exe & found a way to detect the actual error. If its a same error of what you are getting then try the following steps in ur commandline. It won`t solve the preoblem though :( but will show u what`s causing it not to load in your maya.
create a folder call "tmp" in ur C:
& run these lines :
sxstrace.exe Trace -logfile:C:\tmp\MySxSTrace.log
now run Maya & try loading the plugin. let it give the error while it will be traced to ur tmp dir.
now go to command line & hit enter to stop tracing.
The trace generated is a binary file. We have to translate it to human readable text.
run the following command :
sxstrace.exe Parse -logfile:C:\tmp\MySxSTrace.log -outfile:C:\tmp\MySxSTrace.txt
So now when I opened my text it has these errors :

im tryin to get brainbugz working and am not having much luck. i put all the files where they are supposed to go according the to installation instructions. i launched 2010(x64), and when i click on the plugin in the list, i get this message...
Error: This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect
the only thing in the instruction i was unsure of was him mentioning to "make sure its in your MAYA_SCRIPT_PATH" when adding the mel scripts to the appropriate folder. well i have on idea what a maya script path is, or where to edit it. i looked on google, and came across added a line to the maya.env file, which i did (pointing to the default maya script folder) and this still did nothing.
any suggestions on how to get this working?
