View Full Version : Troubleshoot : Restore data from corrupt max file?
chrisdejoya 07-21-2003, 04:11 PM 3ds max 5
There was a power surge while I was working and my computer restarted. The file i was working on is now inopenable in max, and unfortunately I have no backups. Is there any way I can extract the mesh from the file? I hate to see several days of work go down the drain.

Have you tried restoring from your "autoback" folder? Usually max backs up your files every five mnutes(by default). You should see files in that folder with a .bak extension, as well as .max extensions. Change the .bak to .max and open the file.
Should work out just fine. In the future, remember to save incrementally.

No autobacks. Apparently I had unchecked the check box for that option a long time ago and forgot about it. Terrible for it to creep up on me now, but I guess I had to pay for it eventually.
Thanks for the tip anyway, I've searched through the forums for similar topics and from the looks of it I am screwed.

Well, you can always try to do a "merge" function. Sometimes on rare occasions, they data can be retrieved this way. At least give it a try.

Some Other General tips for backups:
- Enable autobackup and set it to something like 5 minutes
- i wouldn't always save in increments, just do it from time to time when you think you've made some big steps, i have "save incremental" set to ctrl+alt+shift+s to do this
- if you want to be ultra-safe you CAN save in increments automatically (enable this in the preferences) and afterwards clean the mess of files up (delete some of them so you're left with files that mark important points / decisions)
Now back to your question:
Take a look at the 3dsmax/win2k announcement being displayed all over the forums, there's a good tip inside: try to merge objects from cour corrupted file into a new one

yeah, i do that merge scene thing. this isn't the first time i've experienced a file corruption. most times, i just say "eh. okay let's start this again." but this time i was just fed up.
thanks again.
