a very clean shiny metal. hightech looking ones

i use lightwave 7.5 so direct refrences to that would be best
but any info will be greatly appreciated.

Well, that's really just a simple chrome surface. Decrease your diffuse down to 0-10%, and crank up your reflection value. Try adding a tiny bit of noise (procedural is fine) to the reflection and spec channels to give a slight roughness to it. Simple :)

hmmm.i tried it and all i got was a dark gray surface. do i need to put an image map on it? or reflection map? and if so what would a good shiny chrome color and reflection map look like?

You are probably getting a dark grey surface because there is nothing to reflect but a dark grey area. The best way to do it is to reder out your scene that he is going to be in....turn your color map to almost pure black and then use the rendered image as a reflection map at around 90%. (its the best cheat to use without raytracing)

crank up your specularity too, to make it shiney and new
