It's possible, just not feasible. The only way to do it that I know of without rigging would be to select the elements/verts/polys and manually move and rotate them. You can do that without much difficulty, it's just tedious and will require a lot of cleanup, especially with more complex models.
If you have access to ZBrush, it has the transpose master that you may be able to use to restore a T-pose without technically rigging.
But honestly, your best bet is probably going to be to set up a simple rig, bind it quick, pose it and do any cleanup required. You don't need controllers or FK or anything, just do straight FK, and if it's a character, you can probably use Biped easily enough. Maybe someone else has some amazing solution I don't know about, but I honestly doubt it.
