View Full Version : 3d Generalist reel 2009
mrtprodz 05-31-2009, 11:32 AM Hi,
this is my new 3d generalist reel, except the Azade Johnson backdrop (with the woman swimming in her living room) and the 3d car in the exterior render, everything was made from scratch by myself. Thank you very much for viewing and commenting.

I really like your lungs! Did you use some SSS on them? How is the freelance coming along? Did you decide to go strictly freelance out of necessity due to lack of full time employment available or because you really are so bad ass that you can get plenty of freelance work with out having to market yourself? If you are marketing yourself how and where? I'm curious because I would like to go full time freelance but don't know how to make the transition.
By the way I asked you similar stuff on vimeo.com so you don't double up on your responses.
Again, great reel.

TP: Thank you very much! I'm really happy that you liked it, as for the rifle it's indeed different from the other works, maybe because it's a lowpoly weapon (I wanted to show more lowpoly stuff but I didn't had enough decent work to place in the reel). I don't know why, I really liked the idea of the Chiwawa Launcher haha
Chillnlikeamug: Once again thank you very much for your kind words, since there is few more questions here I'll answer aswel
The lungs shader is a Vray material with procedural maps, there is a slight transparency and reflection in it.

As for freelance I have to admit there is not many companies here with full 3d employees, I took the example of my friend NicosX and followed his advices, I used to do freelancing but I always had my day job (it made me feel more secure economically) but now I recently decided to go full freelance, trying to contact as many companies I can to show them my work. The hardest part is before going freelance having a client book that will assure you few works a month for a start.

HOLY COW! That is awesome of you to post. I don't work in MAX, I work in Maya, but they are similar enough for me to see how I could apply this work flow. Extremely generous of you to share. Thanks again. I appreciate all the information about freelance as well. I think it takes working with people who are willing to hire you for some freelance stuff before you can break free completely and be completely self sustained on freelance alone. I'm working toward that very goal myself. I don't know if I have the skill quite yet, but when I get my reel finished here pretty soon I'll ask your opinion. Very cool.
Thanks again!

All around very well done indeed!

StSabath: Thank you! :scream: I really hope it will open few jobs for me, if not, well I'll try a better reel until it does ;)
Mynewcat: Haha thanks a lot, I still wonder why I didn't try to model a supermoto motorbike, I always wanted to, but it's a load of work maybe I'm scared to never finish it
Chillnlikeamug: I learned a lot from theses boards, it would be really selfish to not share when someone ask how something was done. I'm really glad it would help, as for freelance I'm really happy to have my friend NikosX with much more experience to guide me through this. I'm not sure I would have jumped into full freelance without him to show me it's possible.

This is exactly (in my opinion) the way to do it, until they trust your work and gives you often projects to do, then you can go on full freelance. Thing is, sometimes it's really hard, one month you can have many work to do and the other nothing, so you constantly have to promote yourself. I have to admit I'm doing more freelance website projects than 3d prokects, but I'm really hoping this will change :)
Phix314: Thanks a lot for your kind words, I had a hard time with max pflow, I don't know why but I was really limited with the rain particles, I had to make few passes and overlay them in after effects.
