View Full Version : Winter war WIP
SebastianZ 05-29-2009, 09:56 PM Hey,
It's my first post on the forums and at last i discovered, where all those Dominance War concepts are from :)
Here's something I've been working on lately (i.e. today 29.05), I really hope to push it further unlike most of my drawings. I'd really appreciate some critique and tips on it :)

Ok, I don't know where to go with that now, it surely can be further detailed and intensified but I'm not sure in which direction i should go: adding some more action or detail it and play with background to get that polished look.. Anyone got suggestions, found anything that doesn't work in this pic?

I like the picture so far, the only thing, there's waaaay too much white, I think you need some contrast bro!

thank you exStatic1,
Yep after long starring on the pic and posting it on other forum i realised that it needs serious reworking including your suggestion as well as some more dynamic. I was trying to play with "camera views", someone suggested that placing viewer slightly "under" soldier on first plan would do miracle, but I'm not ready yet to repaint him. Instead I've tried making scene viewed from bit different angle and adding more effects. So far i have 2 version and I cant decide which way to go.
Mind you, those are yet to be refined, treat them more of an idea of where what is placed and how. Flying machine on the second picture needs some rebuilding because it doesn't hold perspective, I also wanted to add more vehicles/soldiers but I think overall perspective is broken somewhere (probably it "foreshortens" everything way too fast).
I can't promise I'll wait for answers without doodling it over and over but I'll definately would like some criticism and maybe tips on how to push it further "the right way" :)
Thank you in advance :)

I would keep the guy in the front as big as possible and maybe even move him up a little more so the top of his head is about mid way up the giant robot. You might also want to elliminate half the sky just to see how that looks, it would give it a more wide angled view and get rid of extra space. The position of the gun blocks the flow of the eye from the foreground, maybe redraw a version with the gun pointing towards the action and not across the viewing space. If you do move the gun down try moving the soldier getting shot over to where the tip of the gun currently is and maybe make him a little bigger (I know this is a lot so I will post a rough drawing with the layout I have in mind). Hope some of that helps and good luck!
Here is a real quick sketch:

And here is one with some basic guidelines I drew in afterwards to emphasise composition.

This isn't perfect and only a suggestion and I would normally spend more time arranging objects before I start detail work. I'm telling you this because I've ruined many potentially good paintings with bad compositions.

thank you very much CircusRobot, you've been most helpful and I really appreciate the effort.
I understand part with gun spoiling composition and I think i can try redrawing it like you've said and showed. For sky I was planning to add some big spaceships sending capsules with reinforcements and firing some siege lasers, I haven't decided yet and I'll check wheter they'll fit.
Really thank you for ideas, I know basics of composition but I rarely deal with bigger works that would heavily depend on it and I tend to forget about it.
I'll post soon,
best regards!
