Tooncinatore 07-21-2003, 08:52 AM For those of you comfortable at modeling without human anatomy reference, about how long did you spend using reference images before you became comfortable enough to "freehand" anatomy?

Hi!
Reference is not has got, but it's very big help :)
So i make: create a plane (4xample front) and i put the texture/reference to the plane and i use the viewport with Sooth + highlights not wirefram to see the reference...
I have some free human reference if You want them, i copy to the Internet or i send in e-mail...
Bye!

www.fineart.sk has tons of great images that can be used for reference. A lot of them are specifically there for 3d modeling purposes. :)

I understand where to get reference images and how to use them, I was more asking how long it took people here, if anyone, to become comfortable creating humanoid figures without reference images.

It takes 1-2 day, but it will be not good and real human (for me...) But i'm beginner 3d artist... :(

where did you get the idea that this is something to strive for?
i think almost any pro modeler uses anatomy books / references to model realistic humans or humanoid characters. do it the way it's most effective for you...
the goal is not to do everything "free-hand" in 3d... in fact the high-end of the industry always relies on a lot of concept art including sketches and sculptures

As an artist with a background in traditional art I have often been asked to draw somebody from my head (without looking at anything). I am very experienced with the human anatomy and can draw without a visual reference. But never as well as having the subject they’re in front of me!
And I wonder were this request comes from? As if you are not as good an artist if you can't draw without looking at something.
I mean, really! Did Rembrandt draw his subjects from his head?
Do they think Leonardo Da Vinci met Mona Lisa down at the local pub and then rushed home to paint her from memory?
No of course not, they had their subjects right there were they could study them carefully.
Of course now we have the camera so we can use photo references, and in 3D you can use a 3D model as a reference. There is no substitute for having a visual referance of your subject
there before you.

Ah, I probably misrepresented myself. As someone who has for years practiced 2-d art, I know that reference material is always a great idea and not in any way a vice or hinderance. The question stemmed more from my own curiosity. Thanks for the replies!
