Whew, first post... :)

This is a short film project I did last year...I basically just wanted to test Realflow and quickly noticed that water alone is not the most interesting of things to animate - so I added a little fish!
Modeled, rigged, and animated in Maya, rendered in MentalRay, composed in Fusion (although there wasn't that much to compose, I admit it...) and the water simluated - as mentioned - in Realflow.

I'm glad for any feedback, keep it comin'... :)

Guys, I'd really appreciate some response...!
Friends and family love the movie, but they also love when I render a torus with two lights and a Blinn...so I shouldn't entirely rely on that, I guess. :D

So, really, any input from professionals or beginners outside of that group of people is great! I just want to know if the character strikes a nerve, the animation is convincing, the timing is right....anything really.

Thanks!

Thanks man! I was afraid my very first post would drown in the depths of CGTalk uncommented... And as I was rather satisfied with "Lu" myself, I started to doubt my own opinion...in short: You made my day. :)

awesome animation... :applause: very like it...

but I would have a little proposal, in the end when that hole is appearing, maybe he shoud look a little bit sad... like in nearly the middle of your movie

Thanks!
Yes, I was thinking about giving it a more "Bugs Bunny" ending with Lu looking sad and resigned in the end....the thing is, I was rather pressed with other projects and decided to go the old reuse-way...from his reentry into the bowl on, it's the same frames as in the beginning....:D

Still, I'm glad you like it!

nicely animated, but i think it was a bit too simple considering how long it took him to do not very much.

Yes, he doesn't do a lot in 1.30 min, true...
Thing is, I never intended to tell a story...I was just so enthusiastic about RealFlow and wanted to put something funny into the water...:D Only later I realized I could do more with the character and that simulating a 6 seconds splash is no rocket science anymore...:)

hey! its a really cute idea!
i think it would've been cool to see his progression from happy-little-fish to kinda-confused to then maybe sad and then if u dint wanna be cliche, then sorta-happy again, like resolved to his fate... i dunno! just an idea..
but i think i'd keep him still pleased with himself for a few times after he bumps around, like maybe it takes him a few bumps to really get 'it'.
still really cute :)
and maybe he could plop into the water a bit after the water settles down...

hey mate nice work. cute character and the water works.

would be cool if you made it into a screen saver - since the fish drops into the bowl at the start and it jumps out again later and the entry looks similar. so you could just loop it :)

Thanks for the nice response, guys!

Yes, the screensaver is indeed an idea that came to my mind, since the whole thing is set up as a loop-thing...I just haven't figured out how screensavers actually work, what kind of format they are, if it's just a video-thing with a specific file ending...need to google that, it should be quite simple to do - or does anybody have a link at hand that shows how it's done? Would be great!

And yes there are tons of other possibilities how I could have made him cope with his fate...realization, non-realization, resignment, making the best out of it, and so on and so forth....at the moment, he's just too stupid to actually realize what happens to him...when he falls back into the bowl, he's supposed to be in the same state of mind as in the beginning, so that the whole thing could be played over and over again - at least that's what I wanted the viewer to see and what the "joke" is all about....did I succeed to convey that?

But all the suggestions are absolutely good and valuable ideas! I actually thought of making a series out of it....so that in each new episode, something different is thrown into the bowl (a water plant....a little plastic sandcastle....a female fish....:D ) and he needs to react to that in his usual stupid and...er....limited way... :) But unfortunately, I haven't had the time yet and I didn't know whether the idea or the character was worth it...

Anyway, thanks for the replies! Now that "normal" people as well as pros seem to like him, I might actually go back to Lu soon and do something with it.... :)

 KHOOL! ...Would suggest you to go more towards Realistic, That is for your next level if you have any plans...can be enhanced more on character, water Sim, Render, surfacing
Right now looks cartoonic, And its very nice.

Keep up the good work ;)
