This was a spare time project Rich and I did to test modo 401's new features like fur, 64bit, and mechanical rigging. Rendered as one pass.

because most animations that are plugged usually have problems staying up due to the heavy server hit. currently there are 40 people viewing this thread right now. if they are all downloading the same file, the bandwidth usage isn't small :)

Please, mirror this animation, the 900Bytes/s download speed is nonsense.

Thanks, I'll take a look at it when it's hosted elsewhere.

I hope I don't get in trouble for doing this, but I created an individual Vimeo channel just for this video.

Vimeo Channel (http://vimeo.com/channels/46126)

Note: Nicholas Stevenson Aka TwistedSheep had nothing to do with the videos creation, it is simply my Vimeo account. I don't want to implicate that at all, so please be aware. Also, I know Richard and Michael from the Lux forums and such... so I'm not a complete stranger to them :)

Grats on the plug Rich and Michael!

Thanks a lot TwistedSheep, the video was worth watching, really nice stuff! Especially since coming from originally a modeling package! Modo has come a long way and it's getting stronger and richer with every release, very good to see it maturing this way! :buttrock:

Sorry, but you can't say that anymore :p
modo will become a full package for lots of cases in 401 release

it isn't just CA package, and that will come in 501 with a very strong base in rigging

Great work there.. Love how you've captured the weight of the vehicle - I especially liked the part it came smashing down over the hill. The scene could use a little more dust/smoke but other than that really cool.

P.S. Having never touched Modo, I must say the work I've recently seen being produced from it gives reason to dig deeper and find out more about this app - what render engine was used for this piece?

Hello!

I second that too, dust and smoke are barely there. That jump on the hill, of such a huge vehicle would stire a lot of dust, dirt and FX like that ;).

Second, would such a massive vehicle be able to make a spin directly *in place* ? The handling seems far too smooth.

Other than that, it's all great and dandy. It really diserves plugged on the front page.

Congratulations.

for now Modo has not any particle system for dust/smoke

the render is Modo default renderer, that is written by Allen Hasting

Very well done- this bodes well for the future of how WWII tanks will be portrayed in movies. Wish I had time to work on something like this.

It was rendered with the beta of modo 401 as a single pass. It was an experimental piece to punish-test modo 401.

Great work, I'd like to know how you achieved the results.

We tried to stress a lot of the key features of modo with this.

64bit modo
Fur for grass
Instancing for the trees and wire
Micropoly displacement for the road
Physical sky
Irradiance cached global illumination
Radial motionblur
Mechanical rigging (the tread interaction with the ground and the top tread interacting with the swing arm road wheels (they don't piston up and down, they work properly) is pretty damn cool, Rich knows his stuff).

Added links on the 1st post to the Vimeo version (thanks), to the interview Luxology's Brad Peebler did with us about this project, and to Rich's screen cap demo of the rig in action.

I like this. Cool work with the tank and everything else around it. The enviroment seemed realistic. I really like how you were able to get the bounce with the tank and the wheels animation. The sound was good also!

I don't know how fast a real tank like that would go. It seems like that tank went over that hill a little too quickly.:hmm:

Impressive! Amazing that all this is rendered in 1 pass! :applause:

Beautiful animation guys. Congrats on the front page - very well deserved. Love the rigging videos as well. Didn't realize that was all done in a single pass - gorgeous!

Just pre-ordered / upgraded.

Great! :)
Especially rigging and lighting and since I saw some people having doubts about tank's speed and handling i dug some reference : Panther tank- Achtung Panzer! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dp6Krm-hU24)
Quite nice I'd say :)

Glad everyone one here is digging it... it was a lot of fun to work on. I just want to also give John Moores credit for modeling the Tank itself. He's a die hard WWII fanatic (and also co produced the show Tank Overhaul). His model allowed us to focus on the rest of the project :)

On the motion, yeah its not totally realistic... but we were shooting for "cool" over "real"... and I think we achieved that.

The lighting was really nice. The soft tones in the shot played well. The rig is excellent, that tread looks perfect. The materials are nice too, it really conveyed a steel beast.

JM2C (just my 2 cents), the "weight" of the tank is lost because of the lack of accents in the shot when it comes crashing over the hill. There's no tread marks, disturbed earth, or trampled grass. It was more of a.."hey, look at my new shoes" kinda shot, showcasing the excellent rig.
