I can't remember who said it, but a while ago one of the Pixar directors mentioned how with each film they seem to have to pick out some technological problem/achievement (crowds, hair, water, food...etc) before the press seem satisfied.
So when I saw this, I laughed out loud.

What about clouds, as also in the short Partially Cloudy. Is clouds also a field where they researched or is it coming from previous solutions?

15 people for 6 weeks for the scene where the kid runs his fingers through his hair! Now thats attention to detail.
No wonder the flick is A#1.You have to love Pixar.

Sometimes I think they lose the point when it comes to technical details vs telling a story but I'm sure when they have to justify a 150mil budget, the money has to go to some new R&D.
Hey Pixar, how about making someone eat a fully animated spaghetti for next movie! :scream:

I would have been very surprised if they didn't use a physics simulation for the balloons.

Says they used ODE, which was recently introduced into Houdini.
6 weeks isn't too bad, honestly. I think every major show, live-action or animated, has a handful of effects that take months to put together.
I think the original Shrek spent like 2 months on a 3.5 second shot of some milk, getting the SSS implementation correct. I'm sure similar amounts of research were spent on various foods in Ratatouille that didn't get a ton of screentime. At least the balloons are pretty prominent. :)

I think it said they actually DIDN'T use it as they could only push like 500 baloons, as opposed to the 10,000 they needed. Either way it's cool that they use ODE at all... perfectly fine when the need isn't there for something more complex.

Whoops, missed that. Teach me to multitask.
