View Full Version : Showreel - advice?
ssurfy 05-28-2009, 06:35 AM Hey, I only just got me multimedia degree last year, and I just finished my new showreel, I wanted something fast paced that made the viewer say 'wow', but want and need to see it again to see my work properly.
Though is it too 'fast'? Friends and family have all had awesome reactions to it, though I need designers/artists perspective on it too so I have a good chance at getting a job I want.

*Note: The sound sync went out towards the end on the youtube version, the original doesn't.. I may upload that to download a little later too. Though you get the idea.
Cheers

I think the music is a bit too much. It makes you expect something awesome after the intro and the first scene was really bad I suggest you remove it. The particle effects in the beginning were nice though. :-)

The beginning (title sequence) is way to long, almost a third of your reel is this opening sequence, I would make it much simpler and get to your work quicker

Agreed, title sequence is too long, and your camera moves on a lot of the pieces are pretty jarring. After the purple car everything goes way too fast to be able to see any detail. You could possibly try cross-disolving between those stills at the end. Nice start though!
Using VideoCopilot is good for getting ideas, but to take a tutorial and use that as your intro might not be a good idea. I would agree with the other comments as well. Good work though, and it looks like you've got some interesting things in there.

I agree with all the above comments. I would slow the airbrush artwork down and really take some time to slow it down and show it off at the end of your reel. To me it seems like a commercial for a reel which does kind of sound like what you were going for. But most recruiters are not going to take time to go back through and stop at things to really check them out. Nice start. It looks like you have a lot of fun stuff to work with.

Cheers for all the advice so far, gonna go back and shorten the intro, had a few good points too. Will post new version when it's done. :)

Another tip; check out mograph.net
That forum is more geared towards your type of work, check out their showcase section and compare your reel against what's shown there. Then edit your reel accordingly.
