I have been learning 3D with Maya for a while now, doing a lot of video tutorial and read a lot of books.

So I think its time to start my own project, instead keep following instructions.

I want this project to be pretty challenging, so it has a good learning curve for me to gain more skills and push myself to another level.

Therefore, I decided to create a 3D scene/environment from a photo I took in the real life. Do you guys think its possible?

I still haven't decided which photo I am going to use, because I want to consider the technically challenge and constraint that will present to me first.

Is there anyone that can offer me any advice?

Try to use a picture with the least amount of lens distortion. Also, make sure you match your camera in maya to the same setup as the camera you took the picture with (focal length etc.)

depending on what exactly you're talking about, yes. if you're modeling from reference (IE: hand modeling and texturing everything as you see it) that's pretty straightforward. If you're doing camera projection for set extension or matte painting or whatever- then you need to go through the process of camera matching and blocking in the scene.

basically a picture of say a street that I took with my camera, and I will attempt to create a 3d rendering that look exactly like it.

yeah, but is the goal to replicate what you see in 3D- as in model every little detail out in geometry? Or is this for some kind of set extension (IE: visual effects).

This is camera projection:

I know what you mean. I say I want to do a 'still life' 3d image, rather than a matte painting, so I would try to model everything with geometry, instead of a 2.5D/3D effect.

for example:
