View Full Version : Filigree
jgr77777 05-27-2009, 09:27 PM I'm debating about how to go about modeling filigree. This isn't jewelry filigree, but more like wood carving or wrought iron. I've included a picture. This isn't what I'm trying to model, but just to give you an idea of where I'm heading.
I thought about displacement, but I'm leaning towards modeling.
What technique would you use and how would you go about it?

I've never actually taken a crack at this type of thing myself, but I'd start by reducing it to simpler components.
The pattern along the outer edge of the scrollwork is a repeating pattern of a fairly small segment. Array, fit to curve. Within the frame, you can see it's a symmetric pattern across the diagonal. You might try modeling it that way.
I'd be more inclined, though, to try doing it as a 2D painting, converting that to a vector image, and importing that into 3d. Extrude, apply custom bevel.
