View Full Version : Environment: experiment on Time-lapse Mapping
BFlex 07-20-2003, 02:19 PM Mapping with Time-lapse Video?
Didn't remember if anyone has done anything like this...?
8 sec. (1.67MB) (http://mail.ntust.edu.tw/~B8910008/Taipei_Time-lapse(1).WMV)
it was taken one photo per minute :p

I don't quite understand what was done...
You took the timelapse of the city... but what are those white boxes in those pictures you posted?
It looks cool I'm just kinda confused :)

i think he camera projected the time lapse video he did onto those boxes (= buildings) to be able to do the camera move.
quite interesting effect... practical way to do it would be with a motion control, so maybe you can find a way to take it even further, like have a more drastic camera move or something ???
either way, i´m a sucker for time lapse vids, so i really like this one. :D

If that's the case... then wow. Looks really good.

well, the experiment was to make a 2D Time-lapse video into "3D", and move the camera around inside the 3D world.
because it was based on real photos, so it was very realistic yet the shot could be really DIFFICULT to accomplish in real life. :)

bflex, im not sure what is going on exaclyt. is this anything like photogrammetry? could you post what you did exaclty? cause what i saw was really neat. just confused on what you did.

two cameras was used to create this,
as Stimpy said, one is for the camera map projection,
projecting the time-lapse sequence on to the objects,
and the other one is for the camera motion of the video,
creating the illusion that the camera was moving
hundreds of feet down when shooting the shot.

so your doing kinda like photogrammetry? stuff you see in fight club, panic room?
BFlex
07-23-2003, 03:43 AM
ya, i guess you can say that, i did some photogrammetry these
years and i love what they did in Fight Club, it's all about shots
that couldn't be done in real life yet they look super real.
But this one is not quite the same because it was mapped with
Time-lapse sequence, not still :p

oi, confusing. but it looks amazing though. so ...bflex. you do have like 3d geometry in your scene right? and your like camera projecting onto it? im only guessing. i just find this so neat is all.

Another experiment that this video is for is to see how
easy our eyes can be fooled,
here's the wireframe (trust me, it IS the wireframe of the video :) )
http://mail.ntust.edu.tw/~B8910010/Screen2.jpg
notice how simple it is, but when the camera moves,
our eyes thought all the buildings were 3D...

yet so simple and looking so great

very interesting indeed... if i'm not mistaken this is what they do with matte paintings in movies, so that they don't look like still images.

2. your images are unreal! i ...wow. your 3d anime girl is incredible, i just viewed all your regular images there are so beautiful. my god.
doyou ever post your work here? cause you have so so many amazing images. the lady who you can see her naked 3/4 perspective. that image is unreal. wow. i book marked your site to say the least. but wow..what do you do for a living? casue after looking at all the 3d anime pics, you must be some bigshot somewere. youknow so much. wow sorry for saying wow so much, but you just have great great site/images.

oh , for your latest post. with the eyes being fooled trick. what did you do to build your geometry to the image plate? did you like rotate the camera until it was in the right posistion then start building buildings? then project your image onto that?

This is such an immensely cool technique! I'm so glad I saw this post. Very inspiring.
Just a thought: you wouldn't be able to do the crane shot upwards as easily (starting at the correct photo perspective, i.e.), would you?
I mean, If I've figured this out correctly, the perspective has to change so that foreground objects cover more of the background than in the original image, otherwise you would see a duplicate of the building on the ground wouldn't you?
This effect is so cool, not because it's flashy, but because it's simple and cheap (in a good way).

Very nice technique BFlex! It's hard to see the magic unless you really look hard. I love your site too. Beautiful art.
