what's the difference between connecting lens shaders to the camara lense shader slot and the camera output shader slot?

what is this output shader for exactly?

A lens shader is used to modify the ray which is sent into the scene at rendertime and works like other rendershaders on a per sample basis. e.g. if the ray is manipulated it can look like an fisheye.

An output shader can modify the final image(s) and works on a per pixel basis what means after the image is filtered. e.g with an output shader you can add motionblur to your image based on an motion vector image.

An output shader is more like a non interactive compositing tool. In theory it would be possible to built a complete compositing package based on mentalray with output shaders. Would be interesting....
