View Full Version : Magnify Tool Bug?
Pseudonym 07-20-2003, 12:00 AM As a long-term LightWave user, I’ve been looking at the Cinema 4D R8.1 demo and overall am very impressed with the interface and workflow.
One problem I’ve found is that after using the Magnify tool in the perspective view, zooming with the mouse becomes very unresponsive and the view changes to parallel. It’s then necessary to reset the view with Frame Default. This doesn’t happen in the orthographic views.
For me, the ability to quickly zoom into an area of geometry in the perspective view without it becoming dysfunctional is fundamental workflow issue.
Are there any hardware or software settings which may relate to this problem or is it a bug? If it’s a bug, how long has it existed for?

never had this myself. but there are a couple of ways to magnify in cinema, you could try the second which if you're using a pc is to use the right mouse button rather than the left mouse button, and that will in fact magnify (rather than dolly which is the default behaviour). that should react rather more how your'e expecting.

Thanks for the response.
To clarify, I'm dragging a box around the desired zoom region while holding down the M hotkey. The same problem occurs after clicking the Magnify icon and dragging a box.
If I do this with the RMB, it changes the focal length of the camera, which is not what I want.

The magnify tool works by adjusting the focal length of the camera, so as you work, you end up with a camera that is miles away, but using a telephoto lens. Hence changes can be greatly reduced (movement) or exaggerated (rotation)

Thanks for the explanation. So the tool is working properly, it's just that it doesn't suit my needs.
Is there a way then of quickly zooming into an area without changing the focal length of the camera or using Frame Selected Elements?

Can you select a point, edge or poly around where youwant to zoom into and then just hit the s key? "frame selected"

This will only work if the geometry is editable and selected. Often another part of the hierarchy will be selected, for example a hypernurbs or null object.
What I'm after can be done with more steps but this is a workflow issue.
I wonder how hard it would be to create a plugin to do this.
