View Full Version : Painting landscape forests
jacoby308 05-24-2009, 05:52 PM Oh hai there, new on CGS and currently working on the first work to go in my portfolio here. its basically a landscape frame (working in ps cs3), and im having a hard time figuring out how to paint thousands of trees by hand (kinda like what you can do on terragen - only thats procedural)
any help would be much much appreciated

You should show us the layout so we can see in what context you need to portray the trees.
Often what you do is portray the impression of lots of trees, not actually go and paint individual trees. One way is to use organic shaped brushes that lends itself well to creating the impression of lots of small tree shapes, and you use the same method to add the shadows and highlights.
There's also simply just incorporating photo elements into the scene and then tweak/paint on top of the photo elements to get the cohesiveness.

thanks for the reply :)
obviously working at higher res, but for uploading sake, i lowered it... and still trying to get the hang of the colours.. i got some experience with b/w sketching, but colours are my Achilles' heel

oh, i wasnt planning on painting each tree individually (or was i...?) but using the scatter option on the brushes panel with a layer mask wasnt as useful as i hoped it to be

In the case of that landscape, it's best to use organic shaped brushes and just go for it. I'd just lay down masses of tree areas with a darker green value, then use much smaller organic shaped brush and lay down some middle valued greens to shape clumps of trees, and then use even smaller organic shaped brush to actually paint the impression of highlights of the trees.

Hi Jacoby
Try Groundwiz plugin (http://www.gugila.com/downloads.html) If I am not wrong....the trial version is fully functional...that will give you your desired result in few clicks only and will not eat up much render time....I tried this plugin in previous versions of 3Ds max and it worked perfectly....
