View Full Version : Honey Thieves
Bhale 05-23-2009, 04:39 PM This pair of tiny adventurers/troublemakers have stirred the pot and are loving it.
I'm making this piece for my nephew. Its been put on hold forever and i'm finally finding time to finish it. Woot! Any critiques, advice, or paintovers would be appreciated.

Some work on the trees and a conversation with my friend Rawb later and here is where the piece is. Again any and all critiques are welcome.
Such a lovely concept! I just love how you've painted the trees and the grass.
My only crit is with the swarm's flying path.. I'm sure you're going to fix it later on, but it took me awhile to see what that grayish line in the middle of the picture was. I first thought it was a mountain but only after comparing it to the previous picture I realised what it was.
I can see why you added it though - the flypath in the previous picture was incomplete and the picture wasn't in balance. I suggest you make the flypath more simple (not like in the first picture though) and try not to make the swarms path too parallel to the horizon or the landscape. Make the swarm more sharper at their hive. That way we could see their origin more clearly.
The swarm's path is like a storytelling element here. As we're not seeing the cloud of dust of the foxes leave behind we really don't know which way they came from. You could make the swarm's path less complicated by making it show how the foxes got to this point.. You could even make the swarm diasppear behind a hill only to emerge larger and closer to the foxes. They're looking for the shortest path to the culprit. ;)
The swarm needs more definition and details so we can see the threat more clearly - but I assume you're already planning on that.
Great start!

Im glad you like the trees and grass, hopefully it will all be painted well at the end :P I intend to have a few bees closest to us half the size of the baby's head with deadly stingers.
After playing with a alternative path I found that I like that more. It gives more breathing room with the left blocker, doesn't take the eye off the page and hopefully is clearer. My only worry with this iteration is that with the 3 towers pointing directly at the main body of the swarm it starts to compete with the thieves as to which is the focal point. I'll have to think on this more, maybe reducing the number of towers to one?
Thank you for your input Cati, much appreciated
