southern 07-19-2003, 06:51 PM I never really know where to post these Super Sculpey WIPS but as I see them as concept art I suppose this could be the thread.

I put together a small tutorial about using sculpey and a heat gun. Many thanks to Blacklion for putting me on to that trick.

Wow! You've got great control of the sculpey! There are a few things I noticed that don't look quite right, but I'm not sure if it's just the angle of the photos or what. The head looks a little too large, even as a stylistic preference. Also, the upper legs don't look quite right to me, especially from the side angle...but it might be the photo. I can't exactly tell what's going on. The texturing details on the whole sculpture are awesome, especially on the shield. Post more!
You did a really good job on this one.
Nice pose and details.
The wood texture came out really good.
Have you tried painting your maquettes yet?:applause:

 That kicks such large portions of the ass. Is Sculpey difficult to work with (compared to, say, Play-doh)? What is the texture/weight of baked Scupley comparable to? I really want to give this stuff a whirl.

Wow! Very nice work. I love Minataur too especially the head, only fault for me is the hips seem a little too wide, but hey I haven't seen any real Minataurs to know any better. I would love to see what these models look like when they are painted.
This Super Sculpey stuff looks great. Years ago I was using some white clay to sculpt some aliens, but it was a nightmare trying to get details in.
I remember using copper wire from twin & earth mains cable for the skeleton. Where did you get the galvanised wire from?

Beautiful job, southern! I'm very familiar w/ Sculpey stuff... I'm looking forward to your tut, also -- as soon as i saw this, I thought: "I gotta tell him to do a tutorial on this"... happy to see you already included one!
That's gonna be quite the challenge to paint.
Yeah, I dunno where you post a thread like this... it's not really cg related unless you use this as the basis for some cg modeling. Hey, there's a thought.
Just a tip for anyone out there thinking about using any of these modeling compounds: Buy a cheap toaster oven, and dedicate it to this purpose. DO NOT USE YOUR HOUSEHOLD OVEN. There are platicizing agents in the compound that leave the sculpture when you heat it, but don't leave your oven. Each time you use the oven these agents are actively floating around, and are hazardous. No joke, keep this stuff out of your food oven.
That said, it's a most marvelous material to work with! You gotta try it!

Thanks for the commments.
Blacklion mailed me about the position of his left foot. To be more accurate he needs to have the foot turned out to the left a little more. I totaly agree with this comment and wish I had seen it before baking off.
Wildsheep: His head is very big for his body. I wanted to get a lot of detail into his face and Dreadlocks so this was deliberate. THe Digital shot don't really do justice to the Maquette. He seems a lot more in proportion when you can walk around him.
Rey: I am painting him right now. Just applying a base grey coat first they I will see how it all goes form there.
Hookflash: Not sure about PlayDoh. It is like Plasticine in texture and is very cool for high levels of detail. It is softer than DAZ and eassier to work with than FIMO which I find crumbly. Take a look at www.sculpey.com for more info. Super Sculpey only comes in Flesh colour which is great in my opinion as it makes you forget all about colours and makes you concentrate on texture whilst modeling
Lex: I got the galvanized wire from a local hardware store, I bought 300 meters of fine wire for about £4 (about $6 US dollars) and I got stronger armature wire from a contact in a SuperMarket. It was the wire they hang their Point-Of-Sale banners up with and is really good for the base.
Thanks for the feedback guys.

Awesome work!
I love the detail as well as the waxy finish....looking forward to seeing him painted. My one comment regards his feet...I'd imagine the toes (claws) on his left foot would point out by 15-20 degrees for some more stability, since he seems to be bracing himself. At the mo his foot alignment seems parallel, but it could also be the cam angle.
Not that it's a problem at all, just one thing that stands out to me in an amazing piece of work.
I'd love this guy on my desktop :)

This is my second go with sculpey.
I have modeled with other stuff for years. I've made several Dragons with lifelike wings from DAZ, tea shirts soaked in resin, paper mashe, FIMO etc.
I even Made a Nazgul with flowing cloak. That was in about 1987 when Lord of the Rings was still in Cartoon and Book form to me.

Such a thing of beauty, I don't even care if it's not digital [plugged] If you can't use this as reference for modeling something must be wrong. Wonderful attention to detail bud.
Also posted your tut on cgnetworks.com

That came out really cool! I'm looking forward to the painted version. Have you ever tried moldmaking and casting? It's a lot of fun though the casting supplies can be kind of expensive.
I picked up some sculpey a while back and the web page answers some questions I had and gave me some good ideas (aka: the heatgun) Nice work.

Very cool model and the detail is great. How tall is this sculpture?
Perhaps you started something here and more people who do sculptures will throw their stuff on the forum. I mean there is concept art and this is one aspect of it that many studios use to get a feel for their characters before they plunge into 3d.

Man, such a great work you have there. It would be a shame though if you don't digitise and animate it. It would realy bring it to the next level.
Still its a great piece of art on its own.

Hey Southern,
Could you let us in on some details about the baking process as I've read it's a bit tricky getting the timing right without actually burning your model.
Any info would be appriciated.
Fantastic model BTW. :buttrock:
Thanks in advance.

Wowser. I made the front page with my little War Troll. Cool!
Plunder Hawk: The official guide to baking is 15 minutes at 134 degrees per 1/4 inch of Super sculpey.
However, I find that if I bake at around 140 for only 10 mins I get the desired result. The good thing with sculpey is that I find I can fire it again and again. I'm newish to Sculpey so veterans may tell you that issues arrise. I don't know yet as I have't experienced any to date. It is way better than anything else I have ever used.
dmthurman/Jaucifer: I hope you found it but the tutorial is here...
http://www.southerngfx.co.uk/general/tutorials/tutorial.htm
I keep saying it but I thank Blacklion for inspiration here. He is the one who told me about heat guns so the guy must take some credit here.
Scene215: He stands at approx 17" tall by the same width (roughly) I used loads of wire, 2 rolls of tin foil and about 5lbs of sculpey.
Muckywet: Looking into casting now but it looks a little specialised for me I think.
Greenlief: You want to see the wires?? lol. Sorry bud, to see a wire of this one you gotta rip off the Sculpey. I may get around to making him in Lightwave but if anyone else wants a go I would love to see it. There are loads of reference photos on my site.
Erilaz: Post as soon as you make something. I want to talk to more users.
Smokey: Hi there. I will get back to the ZB forums but I am an eclectic artist and need to stretch my wings from time to time. I love ZBrush and always will as it is the nearest you get get to clay modeling on a PC (IMHO). I saw someone describe me as a 'ZBrush Master' and the just puts me off to be honest. Having a distinct and deliberate lack of ego helps here. I will be back onto Z but there are more things in heaven and earth Horatio...like C4D and Maya which both need a coat of looking at this year...
LilDragoN: THanks for the front page buddy and thanks for putting it over of CGNetworks. As I said above, I would love someone to model this in 3D if I don't get around to it. I already did a 2D sketch of him from a photo.
If someone takes it on I could add to the tutorial showing how to take a Maquette into 3D...cool idea me thinks. Someone wrote a whole book on that .....ermmm....Maya Feature CREATURE Creations by Todd Palamar I think.
Anyhoo. Thanks everyone for taking the time to look and comment.
Cheers,
Glen

Hiya Southern,
" The official guide to baking is 15 minutes at 134 degrees per 1/4 inch of Super sculpey. However, I find that if I bake at around 140 for only 10 mins I get the desired result"
Are these times for a conventional oven or a fan assisted one?
As for the modeling of this troll in LW, I might give it a go. ;)

Ah, awesome, man. I had my first experience with Sculpey a couple months ago, now you want to make me sculpt again. Brilliant idea with the heat gun, I'll have to give that a try some day. Very nice work.
ah, nice. i used to paint these kind of models for a living when i was younger :). i dont know but maybe youre familiar with the mutant chronicles? those are the models i painted for a magazine... i think they sculpted them in edinburgh or something. casual 35mm base models.

Got all inspired to make him digitally this morning. I am only using Lightwave for Poly modeling at the moment so I started a rough head sculpture in Modeler.
Any Lightwave users can have a go with the mesh and improve it as needed here.
Do with it what you will and post any progress.

Hello Southern,
Im not sure if anyone has told you about www.animateclay.com but that site is a really good site for things clay/sculpey related.I have done some voice work for the Plum Crazies pilot and am currently on Baord with Sock Puppet Studios sculpting props and non-armatured collateral for a short film on the Jersey Devil headed up by Josh Jennings.I am no-where near the skill level of this puppet I must say, excellent work and obviously you are one talented individual!kEEP IT UP MAN!

But there´s one thing I dislike here... I´d want to add bones, that is - Hehe ;-)

Like everyone else has said awesome work. I've scanned the thread and your site though, and saw this is only your 2nd maquette. Can I ask how long and how often did you work on this model? Do you have any idea what the total time from ideation of the character, to the finished maquette passed?
Thanks-
again amazing work.

HI Mat: The Minotaur was done in and evening and a day.
The Troll was done in several sessions of approx 5 hours each. No sure on this one as I did the Armature whilst waiting for a sculpey order. Then I decided to keep putting him down and walking away to stop me rushing things and getting bored as I do with most projects. So, at a guess, a couple of days total if added together.

Very nice and inspirational to say the least. The only critique I can think of at the moment is the shoulder armor blends in with arm below it. Can u make changes after baking?
Anyone know if hobby lobby in the USA carries super sculptey in >= 1lb units? There web site only lists 2oz packages. I gonna half to give this stuff a try.
