As usual, long way to go, just got to remember that chinese saying about the longest journey begining with one step ;)

Plodding along.

I'm quite happy with the scratched look of the surface so far.

Ok last one for tonight. I know the decals are too clean and fresh. I'll deal with that tomorrow.

Great job so far, I love the look to the decals, they look fine to me. My suggestion to you right now in this early stage of your wip is the eyes are a little to bland...

Thanks for the comments so far.

Emberghost - yeah the eyes need some attention next. I want to make them more detailed and 'gritty'

p0lym0rph - cheers!

Lesterc - The decals were done in photoshop. The main one is just some simple geometric shapes. I started with a blank 256x256 pixel image with a green background colour (doesn't matter what colour because it ends up transparent because of the alpha channel), turned the grid on ( 8x8 pixels), did a circular marque selection, filled that with the white colour.
Did another circular marque selection but this time I strarted drawing out the circle 24 pixels in from the top left corner to 24 pixels out from the bottom riight corner (which was easy because the grid was on).
I then used the linear lasso selection tool to cut away most of the circular selection, I held the shift key down to make the linear lasso tool confrm to vertical, horizontal and 45degree diagonal directions. When I had the 'wedge shape, I filled that with blue.
Did a similar thing for the red stripes, obviously a bit more use of the linear lasso tool was needed.
The parachute insignia on the blue wedge was copied from a military insignia website as it is a realworld insignia for one of the U.S. parachute regiments (might even be the Airborne Rangers, can't remember).
Once I had a 'clean' version of the decal I used the eraser tool to rub certain bits out. After this was done I manually created the alpha channel and where the erased parts of the decal were I made the alpha channel a few pixels smaller so that you get that 'scuffed' look.

The two smaller decals - I took a shortcut I've used often over the years. I opened up the Text Tool in photoshop, set the font to 'Wingdings' and looked for appropriate symbols. There's quite a few good ones in there and the beauty is that they are all properly anti-aliased and can be sized to the exact dimensions you need.
Once I chose my symbols, I rasterized the text layers and manpulated the images somewhat because leaving them un-altered is cheesy and not very original.
As I progress with the droid I'll go back and change them even further from their original states. But using the Wingdings font in photoshop gives you a good crisp starting point.

I scuffed the smaller decals the same way as the main one. All three decals are on the same texture so that I can just project them from the side and not have to worry about UV mapping which would have taken longer to sort out.

Hope that helps Lesterc, if you want me to clarify anything just let me know.

The scratches were done procedurally with IFW2 procedural textures, a plugin for Lightwave (which I'm using for this)

www.shaders.org is the website to visit for further info.

I've posted an interim scene in the finished works gallery. Will progress further when I get back off holiday.
