View Full Version : Character: Honey bee - 24 hour turn around
Grayson 07-19-2003, 10:27 AM I got a call Friday at lunch time from a compositing buddy of mine. He's heading up the VFX for a short film in town. He said he needed a honey bee as close to photo real as possible. And he needed it by lunch time today (Saturday).
Ahhh! I didn't know if I'd be able to pull off something I'd be happy with in such a short time. It didn't turn out too bad considering. I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out. It's 5:30am (sat) and I'm done!! I am a machine!!

Slight changes to the pollen cluster and leg shader.
The yellow clump is a waxy collection of pollen that the bees collect from flowers.

i like this, even not fully realistic, but really nice:thumbsup:
any animation coming?

Yup; there will be lots of animation eventually.
It's for this short film my friend is working on. I don't know if I'll get the contract to do the animation as well; it would be fun but it would mean a couple more weeks of work and lots of compositing. This bee and its hive would be some of the only cg in the whole short.
Siggraph is coming up and I may be moving to Austin TX; so my free time is going to be pretty limited in the next few weeks. I may just do some simple animation tests on my own when I get the chance just to show off the model. I'm pretty excited that it turned out as well as it did.
Good work for just one day. :applause:
But if you'll get the time maybe you want to improve your proportions a little bit. That mid section is too big and also the middle pair of leg looks strange to me. And most of a bees fur is more yellowish - your bee is too brown.

i think, it depends of style. For Fantasy stuff, this is great...has it own style:thumbsup:
But yeah, if u go for realism, then u should tweak it more:)
Personally i like your version.. it's not realistic but awesome still:D

No, the proportions are slmost exact. Its a bumble bee, and they have outragous body proportion, just like the model. In fact, according to flying principles, a bumblebee's body is so large, and its wings and muscles so small, that it should not be able to fly. I used to live in an area with bunches of these bees, they are huge; I've seen a few about 3/4s the size of my thumb.
Excellent job!

Superb work for such a tiny timeframe. I really like how fat and jolly the thing is.
Crits:
The eyes seem to come to a point too much? It looks to much like a cone shape. The pollen gland could use some work texturewise, seems a bit stock.
Other than that, no real complaints.
Cheers, good work, I'm sure your friend will be happy.
