for many months maya has run perfectly. but recently i had a problem and had to reformat my hard disk. since the reinstallation, maya crashes continuously, particular when I try to rotate either an object or camera. it just freezes and that's it, freezes the entire computer (task manager rendered impossible) so far it seems oddly related to anything involving rotation.
i tried deleting my userprefs. no effect.
when i was haphazardly trying to install bonus games in the proper scripts folder, i ended up placing them in other folders than the correct ones. does that sound like a candidate for this problem?
i know this is a wierd problem but im just trhrowing it out there, since maya has always run beautifully until now.

many thanks

ps - premiere & afterFX run fine, so i don't think it's the computer

have you checked to make sure you have the latest drivers for your video card.
i don't really know what it could be but just a guess....

most 3d packages seem to be very unstable when paired with the "wrong" version of a videodriver, so this could be the cause of your problems.
but i'm wondering: from my experience, adobe premiere is even more sensitive for bad videodrivers than 3d software like maya.

are you sure you didn't change anything in your system setup? maybe added a little more ram or installed your os with acpi enabled while in the original setup it had been turned off?
i once had a similar problem and it turned out to be a power supply that wasn't capable of supplying enough power after swapping the gfx-card. such a slight difference...

It sounds like what they have mentioned above. You most likely refomatted your hard drive and then put in the wrong video driver. Whenever your computer freezes completely (task manager and all) it is going to be a hardware issue.
What video card do you have, and driver version?
