i was watching a time lapse of 3d s model. the persons duplicated model would rotate along with his, same with translate. i thought i did this in maya alonttime ago. any one have any ideas?

point and orient constrain are what you are looking for

The point constraint will work for you if you open up the options box and give yourself an offset of a certain distance. And then you can do the Orient constraint the regular way.

You can also write an expression and add whatever the current distance is to your translates, so that it maintains it's distance. You can also use the connection editor for the rotations, but the orient constrain is an easier way. The point constrain with an offset is also just as good as the expression, so as usual there are really several ways to do this.

hmm, i think it would just be easier if i connected it in the connection editor. but its not even a big deal, just curious if maya would do this. so anyone know what the Duplicante with transform does then? i looked in the hlep files i just find a how to duplicate with transform...

its smart transform - remembers how you transformed last duplicate, and relatively does the same thing to the next.

about constrains , you can just change its pivot instead of chaning settings

Although changing pivots would mean that you would get rotation around the pivot and if the pivot is far off, then your object will rotate around that as apposed to rotating around its center. I'm not saying this is not an idea, just something to keep in mind if you choose to go with this technique.

The other problem with the connection editor only, is that if you want the object's positioning to be different to the object that is controlling it, you cant do this if you connect translates in the connection editor, because it will take on it's exact translations. This is why I recommended using expressions.

i gotcha loked. i was just figuring maya would just do this. its not really a problem at all, just handy i guess. i wont worry about it beacuse i rarley rotate my stuff im instancing anyway. but i just figured may awould do thanks everyone.
