View Full Version : Babylon
degerardo 05-20-2009, 09:13 PM Hi there, so as I mention, I'm going to work on Babylon, so here is the first wip.
I know just a render, but I am still modeling some parts, objects like a houses, castles, basic trees etc. I have very quick sketch, but is very basic one so I am not gonna put it here
Is just a speed paint for myself. Shadow is based on the ground and is separate thing so I`ll arrange it than correctly.
Ok, so here :P

oook, I put the sketch here just to show you  pls, is a raw speed paint not full pro-sketch :P
The goal is to catch the mood of old times.

The composition looks a little flat, but i'll hold my reservations for now :)

Thank you guy's for your comments! :)
Dave- yes, I know, that was just a quick sketch to the render. Now I am working on the 3d houses, castles, houses in the foreground which gives more depth and perspective to the mattep. :)
Tonight I`ll upload more clear WIP :buttrock:
Thank you Dave ;)

Just another wip..
Still working on houses, paintings over, more non-flat look, colour palette, mood, lights/shadows...etc...etc.. I change the tower to a bit smaller to create more open space :D

I think you have a really good start here, i like the idea of showing some of the surrounding countryside to a give a sense of context and scale.
I would agree with Dave that the composition is a little weak. Having the focal point placed right in the centre feels too obvious, and at the moment the perspective on the foreground doesn't feel quite right.
Remember also that the tower of Babylon was never finished, as according to the legend God gave all the workers different languages so they could no longer understand each other well enough to communicate and continue building. If you intend to show this story then i would expect to see the tower half finished, with the spoils of contruction surrounding the structure. Worker's camps, primitive cranes etc..a construction site basically
There's a famous painting by Brueghel http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Brueghel-tower-of-babel.jpg
which i immediately think of regarding this subject matter. Of course you might want to show a different story, eg if the tower was actually finished, in which case it should spiral off infinitely into the heavens
I think you have chosena great and interesting subject matter, which needs to be taken full advantage of, keep going ! :)

Hey Thomas, thank you for your comment. Yes, the tower is not gonna be finished. The top part is like a construction, but easier is to paint the construction etc. than model it in 3ds max and render it. So this is just a basic render-as I mention up there :)
Composition looks for now weak, but I am going to add much more detials, much more to the forefroung (trees, statues, hedge, some people, stairs going down there with some ornaments and gate - in the midle, houses, castles, people working on the tower, going there with building material) etc.
So after that I`ll think if I`ll keep the tower in the center of the image or I`ll move it a bit to the left...after foregroung will be finished :)
Thank you man for comments and suggestions.
Gerardo.

Its not the detail thats weak, its clear this is still WIP but the overall layout and composition of elements and how they're framed feels very flat. Ie how you have the wall running horizontal across the frame. Also check the horizon line, this seems to fall way too low, which in turn would completely alter the perspective of the tower. Sorry man, You might need to go back and rethink this one from the beginning, disregarding details and WIP, the composition itself isn't working.

Ok, I am going to have a look in the 3ds max and render it out with different camera DOF and size of lense
...mmm... ok, so I am going back to start ;)

Hey I agree with Dave.
The perspective is really off tho in the wip. The 3D render FG is pointing way higher then the horizon. If i were to draw out the left side stairs to meet the horizon, it wouldnt meet up with the right side. I think you have a good idea for a matte, but I feel like you got a little excited about rendering out a 3D image and rushed to soon to the painting :)
