View Full Version : SMC 07: Holding Facility

You have 100 Minutes to model a prison cell, laboratory cell, any kind of place where a person or animal may be held against its will.

I borrowed the idea from the game artist forums link (http://www.game-artist.net/forums/speed-modeling/8159-smc-57-december-14-december-21-cell.html) and added about 10 minutes to the challenge.

We'll hope to run this no longer than 7 days, but if someone needs a day maybe two, just post up and let us know.

The requirements will be a wireframe and a PROGRAM STANDARD shaded view screen-capture. Then, after you have that, you can feel free to provide a beauty render. Please try to keep to just one render, but if you feel like you need more to show it off, provide a link to your photobucket image or wherever you have it hosted, posting the whole image, just to kind of save space.

Also, we should try to post only the thumbnail links, to make it easier on everyone viewing from slower connection to smaller monitors. Just something to keep in mind.

Now.... GO! haha.

As you can see, today i had all the time of the world! This is my second entry of the day (the first one was on smc-6).
The image quality is kind of bad because the forum only allows ~95k per image and i can't upload to photobucket right now.
Model was made in aproximately 1 hour.

Hey guys.

I'm fairly sure I broke the time limit on this one (slightly over 2 hours), but I enjoyed modeling it, so I'm not that worried. Attached is my model - the brig on the Enterprise D. The room's shape is all messed up because the only reference picture I had was the attached picture from an odd perspective viewpoint. Realized too late that the room wasn't actually rectangular, but rather larger width-wise in the front and narrower in the back - alas.

Here is my first submission to the forum. Definitely had a lot of fun with this one. Is there a way to attach thumbs? Also, each time I try to insert an image I get a broken link. Any suggestions?

I must say, I'd rather be imprisoned on the Enterprise than in your prison - looks harsh!

You can post thumbnails with the "Manage attachments" box below the text entry box when you post. If you post your screenshots on photobucket you can throw them right into your post with the <img> HTML tags.

Ahh, ok, thanks zephod. I figured it was something simple like that (though perhaps the manage attachments option becomes available after so many posts?).

BTW, did you sketch up the shot for your model reference? Or is it from somewhere else? Your model looks pretty solid, the only thing that really concerns me is all those triangles popping up in your corners (it sort of makes the wire frame look a little messy). Though, seeing that I'm pretty much a noob myself when it comes to modeling things, this may not be such a big deal (especially if you don't plan on unwrapping this thing and texturing).

Also, I'm assuming you weren't trying to replicate the scene exactly, but the fans and the consoles above them seem a bit off (the consoles come out a bit too far and are too wide and the fans are just off).

Just thought I'd at least try to offer some constructive criticism. Keep up the good work! And thanks again for your help.:)

No problem! And it was basically a complete hack job. That reference picture attached was all I had to work from, so what I did was opened it in paint and switched back and forth between Maya and it (image planes be damned). Not the world's most precise process if I do say so myself. I'm going to re-do the model tonight if I have time - get the dimensions and geometry right this time now that I know what went horribly wrong. :)

It took about 1 hour. I took a break, so I'm not sure. I though I'd be done in 30 minutes, because the bricks and the roof didn't take more than 20. The roof is a cone with a scattered box. For the bricks I made two rows, multiplied and applied an FFD + turbosmooth. As weird as it may sound, what took the longest was the hair falling out the window. It was kind of complicated to get the braides right.

i like your take on the concept of the challenge!

When I have time to sit down and model mine, I think I'm going to go a little more... out there... than most.


I'm loving the turn-out though, more and more posts and a good bit of enthusiasm. Just what we've lacked from this place on the challenges we first started to strike up, and I thank all the members for sticking with it from the first and all of you who have joined since.

I made another image fot this challange, i thought my first one was not ´scary´enough!
I could not make that little cage as detailed as i wanted because i was running out of time while i was doing it.
Made in around 90 minutes.

Edit. Someone knows an easy way to make those bricks look more random? I know Max has that noise modifier and it does exactly what i want, but i can't find something similar in Maya.

the challenge constraints are basically so you can challenge yourself more than anything. we haven't judged these challenges in a while and I think that it's probably best not to. It kind of takes some of the pressure off but still having a goal to meet in a time period is a good challenge for yourself.

Some nice entries so far, im looking forward to this

Not entirely happy with the overall model, i learnt alot of new things which i am very happy with though.

My idea was a floating cage with keys falling around it, serving as torture to the person trapped inside.

They are keys falling btw.

Took me about 80 minutes. I actually ended up with something close to what I planned for which is nice. Let me know what you think. Excellent work so far everyone!

Digitool, overall I'd say you definitely have a solid model (and the beauty shot is great), but the roof kind of sticks out more like geometry rather than actual roofing tiles--then again, it works well enough for a speed challenge. Though I'm sure that with some texturing done on the roof tiles and the cone, things would come together in a more cohesive way. And is it just me or is there some sort of black shadow thing behind the moon?

JohNny45, I really like where you took the topic but the bars for the gate don't look quite right. Perhaps you could make them a bit thinner? Everything else seems to work quite well together. Nice job! And btw, what did you start out with for the sphere bit? Was it a sphere, box, or something else completely?

Destroying Zen: That was not my model, but thanks for providing feedback for the persons model. I was quoting someone else's post. My model, well, No time for it yet, but I'm hoping to get around to it really really soon.

I agree with the afore mentioned comment about your bars being a little thick there, but I think it's a great concept, done really well.

I haven't had a span of time that I can work on anything all week!!! And so unfortunately I'm going to probably have to just jump on the next challenge, although since I want to get my idea out there, I may still make my concept for this challenge and post it later. I think it's cool if I can get it pulled off, we'll see.
