Hi i'm starting to finish up my car model but when i use HDRI it comes up w/ chunks of crap in the render perhaps a picture will help. Does anyone know what 2 do to fix this? perhaps it doesn't have anything to do w/ HDRI i'll try w/ a regular texture soon

looks alot like flipped normals on those faces. If that's the case you need to flip them back or cheat and make the material double sided. (which can impact render time)

It renders fine when I put a regular material

BTW I am using SCALINE renderer but with the HDRI importer by Brazil! (i can't afford brazil )

so what material did you have on it before?
I thought you said you were using hdri? thats not a material

is it just in the environment slot? or using it for the skylight as well

I dont know any reason why those funky bits would apear...

can you post a wire frame?...i would like to check that...and...oike reeves said... hdri isn't a material...and less in brazil...there's a map on vray...but brazil?? :shame:

waiting some update

Indeed Scanline can use HDRI lighting, with the help of the HDRI import plugin from Splutterfish.
This plugin has nothing to do with Brazil, in fact, and is a "stand alone" plugin that just gives Max the ability to read (and write ?) HDRI files.

To get HDRI reflections you need to put an HDRI map in the environement slot (for example), to get HDRI lighting you need to put an HDRI map in the Skylight's slot (and turn on Adv. Lighting - Light Tracer).

I don't quite understand what you mean by "regular" material ?
Those funky bits do look like duplicated faces or flipped ones, you should check the geometry of the mesh.

Not sure about your problem, but here is a tut for HDRI with max scanline:

Pete has some fantastic tuts there, go check it out.

Sorry about the title of the subject ... i wasn't sure what to call it..

Yeah i guess i kind of confused material and map .

I am using nothing but an HDR file in the environment slot of a 3dsmax raytrace material

By default material i mean the "Standard" material w/ nothing checked etc..
Ihave tried using 2-sided it still comes up w/ chunks!

I am not using HDRI lighting only HDRI reflections

hope that clears everything and as for a wire frame:

hope that works if not click here:

and scroll abit

I hope you didn't put the HDRI material on the car?

What do you mean? actually applying the map to the car? NOOO i didn't do that.. i applied a material.

O yeah sorry this isn't a Raytrace material... only raytrace reflection ( :surprised ) ARRRGH i am confused It is a standard material Multi Layer !!!
