View Full Version : Another Cinema 4D'r
kevin3d 07-19-2003, 01:30 AM For almost 2 years I've been evaluating which 3d software to use for personal and freelance work. Looked at 3ds max (used since DOS R2), Maya, Lightwave, C4d and Blender. Finally chose Cinema4D and my package came today!!!!!

Two years! I don't know about these impulsive decisions, but IMHO you certainly made a good choice. ;)

It got to the point where my wife would say "JUST MAKE UP YOUR *#@!@!# MIND!!!"
Since I had access to 3ds max at work and Blender at home, and wasn't freelancing I could take my time. I basically decided awhile ago but was going to wait till SIGGRAPH was over.
It has been very interesting in seeing the changes in 3d app market over these 2 years. Several times I was going to go with LW, but had nagging doubts. C4D R8 made the decision for me, as well as input from here and http://www.cgarchitect.com/

I just got C4D R8.1XL Bundle about a month ago also - I've been a Lightwave guy for 6-7 years. But, I've got to admit - C4D is really on a roll and a force to contend with. It's a very nice and STABLE application and has a very coherent feel about it.
I always like to keep my options open. That's why I'm trying to learn equivalent methods from Lightwave - hence, my recent post on SpinQuads.
I also got the DVD "Character 01" by Cgartist.com. It's nice to see Jens Jung's workflow and it has really helped me come to grips with some of the more advanced features. You might want to consider it. :)

But it appears to be in German?
I guess one of the more advanced features must be german translation.
Need to find that button, the instant german button. its been hiding from me lately.
Conrgats dude I also figured that you used C4D. I can't imagine only taking two years usually i do about like 5 lol.
jk good choice.

Ya, ya - das ist ... oops sorry ... It's in both German and English. :)
I ordered mine directly from Maxon though - the salesperson brought it up when I got R8.1, she said it's not on the website just yet.
When I started playing it, I thought "Well, isn't that nice... what am I supposed to do with this and can't understand a word this guy is saying?" But then, I found the English track in the Language options.

I am focusing on:
A) 3D animation: flying logos, low/mid-range character animation, and getting into architectural viz .
B) 2D animation & GFX: after effects compositing, logo & corporate, Flash animation
C) Web design & programming: HTML, XML, FLASH
I worked in all these areas at my last job, as well as a lot of Director stuff. I chose Cinema4D because of how well it supports areas A & B. At the risk of a gross simplification/generalization, my impression is that C4D is to freelancing what Maya is to film production.
On another note, my wife (who is a digital photographer with a limited 3D background) was watching me work with Cinema4D. Now she wants to get back into 3D.

wow, thats a vast range :)
considering point 2), i guess that the C4D plugin to AE took part in your decision. as well as the flash export feature for point 3).
well, i wish u best luck to succeed with C4D. keep us updated about your progression !

as for that, let me point you to w3schools.org
the tutorials there are the industry standard..as for flash, I would STRONGLY recommend ONLY "Foundation Flash MX"
and after going through that "Foundation Actionscript for Flash MX"
those books are the cream of the crop..although others have been publisized much..
btw, welcome to the c4d community!
