lebada 05-19-2009, 10:20 PM Looking quite good...and different. Possibly a (better) National Treasure adventure meets Ironman (quirky-ness) set in Old England...im having high hopes for it.

Directed by Guy Ritchie...starring Robert Downey Jr (whom I have always regarded an awesome actor) and Jude Law (well he is also amazing)...this should be good!!

The only problem I have with this trailer is the amount of action. Sherlock Holmes is an intellectual crime solver, and though he was an accomplished fist-fighter, he was never an action hero. It looks to me like they've dumbed it down for the Vin Diesel fans.
But I could be wrong.

Hell with Robert Downey Junior and Jude Law—more Rachel McAdams, please.

**that's funny I just started to read Holmes. I am at chapter 5 of The Sign of Four where he mentions having done some prize fighting.

yeah actually Holmes does fight quite a bit...
My problem, however, are the women - Sherlock and women don't mix well to be honest - there was only one woman in all the stories and novels that he was fascinated with and it was only at a distance [he admired her brain not her curves]... Holmes did pretend to be engaged once but it was pure business othewise he wasn't really into women and didn't trust them at all and to see him flirting and kissing is just out of character...
all in all I love it though - I am a big Robert Downey Jr. fan so I'm in for any movie with him in it. Combine that with victorian - well judging by the trailer quasi victorian more like - era and I'm hooked :) Looks like fun and I wouldn't expect it to be too faithful to the books.
Anyway there was only one awesome, faithful version - Jeremy Brett. He was Holmes. Period. :scream:

True, but Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce still has a warm place in my heart. Unfortunately this trailer looks like they dumbed down the characters for mass consumption. I hope I'm wrong, but there isn't any sign that there's an intelligent mystery here.

I tend to think of Rathbone's voice as I am reading, though I was familiar with Brett from tv.

I agree. Those two were the definitive Holmes and Watson. I did like what Spielberg did in the movie "Young Sherlock Holmes". He wasn't afraid of action as long as it was needed. Most of the time he used his wits instead.
This isn't a Michael Bay retelling of Holmes, is it? I don't know about this... time will tell I guess...

I do love me some Downey Jr., but did this not seem really goofy to others. I hope there is serious moments of sleuthing and criminal activities as well. :)

I agree with you, Intervain. Jeremy Brett is the definitive Holmes. It’s too bad that he is no longer with us.

Re-inventing Sherlock Homes? No, this is changing it to appeal to the Jason Statham generation and is nothing whatsoever to do with Sherlock Homes at all. I was hoping for a proper film(the director and cast seemed sound) but this is pathetic and a slap in the face to its intended audience.
This is like making a film about Ghandi and but delivering this instead...
Ghandi 2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QfvLcozLwtE)
...this film will bomb at the box office, and after a single month release on DVD will end up as a £2.99 clearance bargain.
Now don't get me wrong, I am open to films that see a well known character in a new light, but in this case it would be Young Sherlock Holmes, not this.
Oh, and Jeremy Brett was the best Sherlock by miles.

True, but it's going to be good popcorn entertainment! I'm looking forward to seeing it myself.

Wow, Holmes with kung fu skills. Niceeeeeee
It looks like a fun movie, although Ill admit I was hoping for something a little more...cerebral when I heard they were making Sherlock Holmes.
Hell, this is basically Wild Wild West...without the giant spider.
I think that one of the best portrayals of Holmes is actually Hugh Laurie's HOUSE. Perhaps not in temperament, but definitely in brilliance.

Yeah, look entertaining ... but not a film you're gonna look 10 times,
for me the best re-invention of thoses character was : without a clue , with michael Caine and Ben Kingsley. that was a great adaptation...
anyway I feel, I'll take some pop-corn too.

Yes! I didnt think of it till I read your post but I agree! I have a lot of respect for Hugh Laurie as an actor. He is actually great inspiration for me in terms of acting for my animation.
I am still not sure about this movie. I love RDJ but along with others I was wanting something a little more serious. This does look like another Wild Wild West. Time will tell so I will not judge right now.

hol,es was always a brawler in the books.. And he did indeed practice martial arts...again the books.
It is just that we have been presented a vision of holmes molded mostly by the
great Basil Rathbone in the 30's and more recently by the BBC.
For its time holmes WAS popcorn entetainment.

ugh...
this looks dreadful....Pirates of Victorian London...
the only people who think Sherlock Holmes needs to be updated with 21st century sensibilities and for todays audiences hasn't actually read the stories...
and as much as I like RDJ, his accent is terrible...as it was in Chaplin, almost ruining an otherwise brilliant performance.

And was an expert at the short stick, and sword. I dont actually mind the fighting aspect, or the slightly 'cheesy' feel, I just hope that the actual detective work that made Sherlock Holmes what it was doesn't get lost in the 'Tomb Raideresk' qualities it looks like the story has.

if they would make the movie for people who only read the stories and bore everyone else who hasnt read them, the movie would bomb before it would even be in theaters. This is a business afterall (which comes with its obvious bad underlayings but sometimes good ones as well).
it aint over till the fat lady sings...and who knows...she might even be in the movie:thumbsup:

If you were dress up like Robert Downy Jr is in this film and go to a costume party and say you are 'Sherlock Holmes' most folks would say <shrug> "and so I'm Santa Clause."

Lol I like his costume actually - the stripy coat's cool :D - about the deerstalking hat - Holmes only wore it in the woods and country - here he's in the city so I wouldn't expect him to wear it...

Right so change that to: I miss the hat *and* the countryside. :D

Well, though I have to admit to liking the trailer (I haven't read any of the Sherlock Holmes books...I think, maybe a long time ago, so that isn't coloring my viewpoint), I would point out that the actual movie could delve fully into a mystery and how it is solved, but for mass ticket sales they will of course want to keep the action high in the trailer to draw in the crowds. Now granted I believe there was a quote of Richie's that indicated this is supposed to be different from the books, a re-imagining, so then maybe the action element is at the helm. We'll see...

I thought it was great - made me chuckle a few times. I'm pleased to see Guy Richie move away from that stylised 90's look that he'd stuck with for the last few movies.
I'd check this out at the flicks for sure
circusboy

Don't know about that. Is he moving away from the 90's or just towards pedestrian Hollywood?!
His best work never felt dated to me-just refreshing. I'm not sure what I'll get with this one.

Downey Jr.... well he automatically has me interested. After this trailer it really does seem to be a swashbuckler style telling of the story. The line I do this for a living makes me think that Downey will be playing character for laughs.
I know i'll check it out in any case. I'll just appreciate it for what it is.
