Ok, this is the story, I have been 3d modeling in 3dsmax for about 3 or 4 years now, and am right now 14 years old. I guess what I want to know is what the best way is to get better because right now I kinda suck still. I am discouraged in a way because I know if I sit down and 3d model something that I would really want to then I know it will come out crap and therefor I do not want to 3d model. Sometimes people tell me to 3d model simple things like a phone or calculator etc. but that to me is boring and is too simple because I have done what those people tell me to do. I really want to do organic modeling. I am into wanting to make a head (as realistic as I am capable of) and I find no tutorials on how to make realistic heads, just magna/anime/cartoon heads. I was wondering if my best bet is to just try to 3d model the head my own way or find a tut or book. Also in tutorials the people tell you like exactly what options and how many segments you need to make the kind of head. how do they know? any help I would greatly appreciate, thanks in advanced.

I hope i won't sound too harsh, but i think your best bet is to practice, and not rant or whine.

First off, you're still young and that is a good point, you've got some time on your hands to practice.
You say you've looked around for tutorials on realistic organic modeling and found nothing, i say you did not look that good, or did not look everywhere.

The way i see it, in tutorials, people show you how they do it, they're not telling you to replicate exactly what they are doing. You might replicate more or less a first time, but then you're on your own : tutorials show you methods, toolsets used, ways of doing things that you have to understand to be able to model on your own.
Also, i think these people do not 'know', they have tried, practiced a lot, looked at reference material and so on...

now that's just my 2 cents

ok thanks mouj. Drawing probably helps too huh? if that helps a lot then I think I might need to work on that. I really suck at drawing and everytime someone tells me to practice drawing I say ok and never do it because I think it is a waste of time and I know I cant make anything good. heh, does tracing count as drawing  ? I guess I need to stop making myself think I need to make something good at first and stop worrying about that. but on the other hand if it turns out crap I get discouraged and get down on myself. But that isnt getting me any better is it? No it isnt. Thanks for the talk :)

FYI that tut linked to on my site the spline one is pretty old. I also have a more updated Poly Modeling head tut also on my site under the 3d help section as well.
