View Full Version : Visible Spotlight Lighting question
hopper2k 07-18-2003, 10:13 PM I have a scene where I just have a spotlight shining down on an object, and everything else in the scene is in darkness. I want the spotlight to be visible, and that's the problem I'm having. I created a spotlight light, have it shining down, but I can only see the object being lit and the light shining on the ground, but can't see the actual spotlight itself. Any suggestions.

So you want it to be a volumetric light? Or do you want the source of the light to produce some sort of lense flare?

Yeah, I guess I'm going for a volumetric light. I don't want a lense flare. Is there a way to create volumetric lighting in Maya, if so, how?

I guess a better way to describe what I'm trying to achieve, is imagine you are in a dark room, then a spot light from above shines down in front of you. Now, you would see the entire cone of the spotlight because it's shining so big and bright. This is the type of light effect I am trying to achieve. Please help! Thanks.

Nevermind, I solved the trick. I created a cone primitve and added a fog texture to it and it did the trick. Now I have a real spotlight shining down, and the cone with the fog texture gives it the spotlight a visible effect.

That's kind of backwards way of doing it. A more proper way would be to use Light Fog. Search the docs for more info.
