Title: Pixologic Superhero
Name: jeff miller
Country: USA
Software: 3ds max, Photoshop, ZBrush

This character was created to promote Pixologic's Actionhero contest. I created a number of poses and rendered for different banners and ads. It was modeled and textured in zbrush, and rendered in max. It took 6 days to complete.

Great picture and very dynamic final image. DC and Marvel Comics once created this Amalgan-Universe where they created new heroes by combining existing one. Yours looks like a fusion of all of them. Here is what I see:

The lover costume design: Daredevil
The upper costume texture: Aquaman
The star: Cap. America
The belt: Batman
The mask: Flash
The googles: Night Owl
(I read too many comics)

But yours is very original  Is the background from The Dark Knight or 3D geometry?

Great work Jeff!

Like Petz said, I can see a lot of different characters in his design - but that's no bad thing!

I would say that it looks like his torso is too long in this shot. The belt helps break this area up but I get the feeling that if you were to remove it he'd look very 'stretched'.

I really like the suggestion of the environment. A couple of the glowing embers/ashes in the foreground look a little knocked back/grey, which looks a bit strange (to me).

It would be great to see some of the other poses you did too. :D

First- great model. But why is it a re-coloration of Ultimate Captain America by Bryan Hitch? Its not, as suggested before, sort of influenced by a bunch of designs- but a change in the coloration of a single design:

http://www.geocities.com/comic_craig/capHitch.jpg

Okay- so I'm an ultimate nerd for even pointing it out- but just wondering what the story is? Was this model originally created for an Ultimate Cap project? Great work either way.

Um, I think it's a coincidence? The only thing similar is the camera angle and the belt. And I think the comment you are referring to was what the poster saw in the image, which was his opinion, as this is also yours.

Great job!

OMG!! 6 days to complete? That's so fast. Did you have a pre existing figure model or are you just super fast? This is incredible work. I gotta learn z brush. What type of renderer did you use in max?

RedRepublik
05-22-2009, 09:33 PM
Thanks for all the comments guys. I agree with the crits about the pelvis/legs. i guess that is a casualty of the short deadline. Pixologic wanted a generic superhero that used typical superhero traits, which was good, since the deadline didn't permit me time for concepting. I started with a base male body I had, and spent the next 6 days sculpting, texturing, posing and rendering. I created all the textures and normal maps in zbrush, and then imported him into max to render in mental ray. the lighting rig is just a simple 3 point set up with a skylight. here is the pose that was used for the main banner:

We can all agree that this is a great image and executed amazingly- but as for costume design- I thought there might be a reason for the similarity- an homage maybe? Not limited to the belt, I also see the same chest star, shoulder star, glove, mask design, chain mail, even the way the chain mail splits into cloth on the chest ... basically the same costume with different colors. Not saying its a bad model, or wrong to use the design, just wondering if there was a story behind the use of design?:

lol its just a copy, Should say that, its so obvious.
Even I can pull out some ideas on different design in 1 hour without concepting.

Maybe next time you should cover your tracks and change your design little more.
Plus you completely ripped of background from this poster. Very cheap off you to do so.
Im sure you got paid for this aswell.

Shocking that cgtalk let this get posted on here, I cant even post untextured work, but this copycat crap can. http://popculturezoo.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/05/newjokerposter.jpg

Should just rename thread to Captain Americas Brother.

Hey guys. Thanks for all the comments, both good and bad. To reiterate, I created this as a favor for Pixologic under a very tight schedule, while working a normal job as well. I cut corners on design, but i am still proud of the work i did on the piece and wanted to share it with the cg society community. It borrows heavily from existing comic characters, especially captain america, and if i was actually entering it into the contest, i would not have done something so dirivitive.

to get back to the artistry of the piece, here is the zbrush model

Perhaps a mention of your background source would have been a bit more honest.

Nice attempt though, the torso looks a bit funny especialy around the waist but well done on the award :surprised

The zbrush details look good.

I like the overall character. Good sculpting, if you consider the 6 day deadline. But I have to agree with the comments made above. The torso feels a bit too long, and again the background "rip off". In my opinion its not worth the award. Easy on the awards here CGSociety!

**** 4 Stars!

Amazing stuff!! I remember looking at the banners for that competition and wondering where could i get a better look at that guy!
I assumed the background wasn't made from scratch on such a tight deadline, anyway it's the char. that i find amazing! Great stuff!

beckyswts
05-27-2009, 09:24 AM
I have to be honest here and say that this character is good overall but is a direct copy of Captain America. There are anatomical problems i notice so its not really award material. Now since the original source of the background has been revealed to be the Batman - The Dark Knight promotional movie poster, it seems really unfair to everyone posting their works that do not use movie posters for their backgrounds.

It is quite off putting that this work got an award and it doesn't feel right at all.

I really thought that Cgportfolio was a place for showcasing talent not copycats.

Wow looks absolute sensation. texture and model are nice. Just one thing when
staring for a while it looks the crouch area is little distented to left and in bottom, if
going for the pose i will say it should go little right and in up direction just a little.

It's too bad comics editors are biased against cg art,
the last 3d comic things I saw were some attrocious Hulk covers
like ten years ago! :D I guess there are the Adi Granov iron man covers though,
I say those are 3D no matter what he says... :D So I can see this attitude changing,
but it seems like a 'one way' thing where comic artists are being courted to design character concepts for 3D studios, but comic companies are allowing no CG covers etc.

As jaw dropping spectacular this image is, what is even more astounding is the fact that it only took you 6 days.

OMG!

I know I'm just a hobbyist but that would have taken me about 6 months full time. Assuming of course I had the requisite skills to even attempt it.

I like your work. Apart from minor anatomy tweaks needed, it's well done imo. Congratulations on a job well done.

Honestly speaking I don't see a problem with the bg. After all the most character artists use 3d anatomy references directly into their work and their not scolded for it. Its all about the end result and skills exhibited.

With the tight deadline and resources you had within the time frame, I believe you've done a pretty nifty job. Congrats.

Now since the original source of the background has been revealed to be the Batman - The Dark Knight promotional movie poster, it seems really unfair to everyone posting their works that do not use movie posters for their backgrounds.

I opened each image in it's own tab on firefox, and switching between the two, it is not the exact copy. Inspired maybe, but not the Dark Knight poster background. If I were you, I would do a small amount of investigation before waiving a red flag.

I've seen a fair amount of works that have this kind of composition and "camera angle" to say no to carbon copying Marvel's "Captain America". Although it does resemble it doesn't mean it is copying. Infact, if you knew composition at all, Jeff used a combination of a cross composition along with an iconic composition.

I can see the super resemblance between this character and Captain America. The placements of the stars, the chainmail, gloves, boots, etc...it's still not Captain America. Didn't Cpt America have a sheild? Did he have goggles? A red, white and blue color scheme? Heck, I even remember Cpt America having small wings (http://marvel.com/universe/Captain_America_%28Steve_Rogers%29) on his head. Again, inspired (on a quick deadline mind you), but not copied.

Reguardless of the anatomical inaccuracies, all I have to say is that this is better then anything I could even hope to compete with. I would love to be able to do work at this level one day.

I say 5 out of 5 stars!

Good work,

On the Captain America issue: Most of you seem to be familiar with the classic design of the character, however as some of you have already pointed out the model bears a striking resemblance to the Ultimate version. With the only difference being is a re-coloration in certain areas. Here's a picture reference to show you.

However, that's not taking anything away from the creator. He did a fine job regardless, and truly has outstanding talent.
