If you need a specific pattern, I would recommend Vertex Paint (what didn't work when you tried?) or painting a mask in PS for use in a Blend Material or a Mix Map.
If you want random blending between two textures, you can use one of the many procedural maps (Noise, Smoke...) as a mask.

Thx for replying.
Well theres a tutorial online by a guy called Kevin Oxland for blending textures:
http://www.kevinoxland.com/Images/Blending_2_Textures_in_3ds_Max.pdf
It's pretty straight forward but I never managed to get it to work. I get up to the point where you add a gradient ramp for the mix amount and then what I see is the vertex shading still in the scene and when I render it doesnt look right. There is only one material. I think it may be down to the material ID is wrong somewhere??
Confusing I know but if anyone could help it would be appreciated. Also does anyone do this kind of work i.e. environment work? Whats the best method etc.

I think he left out one vital step in this Tutorial...you have to use the Vertex Color Map in you Material or it won't work. Either use a Vertex Color Map instead of the Gradient Ramp or set the Gradient Ramp to 'Mapped' and put the Vertex Color Map into that slot. (You can then easily controll the blending with the Gradient Ramp instead of tweaking the Vertex Color.)

Thank you so much Piflik it works now!!
Assigning Vertex Color to the source map within the Gradient ramp allowed the maps to mix perfectly. Although the viewport only displays the white map - mud and shows the black map - grass as black. Though I can test by rendering. Thanks

Any Maya equivalent to this procedure? I've been banging my head for days to be able to do this on a terrain I'm trying to texture!!!
