Hello,

I am looking into taking animation courses and many roads and recommendations point back to Animation Mentor. Their courses look top notch and seem to cover many of the methods, theories and fundamentals. One small problem is that they only use Maya and I am kind of scared to make the leap from 3DS max to Maya. Then I am learning Maya and animation at the same time which sounds distracting. I suppose I have the summer to mull it over. Another major issue is that all of my assets for the project I am currently working on are in Max.

Is there another equally good online school that teaches animation but with 3DS Max?

Thanks!

Hey Dave,

Animation Mentor is software independent mate, in fact you could
pretty much do the course as 2D hand drawn is you chose to.

The supplied rigs are for Maya that's true, but there is nothing stopping
you from using your own rigs, or one of the free ones out there. So it
does not matter if you use Maya,Max,XSI,Houdini, etc but I think they
might only be able to support the supplied rig, so I would weigh it up.

Hello Dave
I agree with Lewis, you really should not be scared of using Maya for AnimationMentor.
Originally, I'm a Cinema4D user and had pretty much NO idea about Maya when I started AnimationMentor. That's really not a problem at all.
They give you some tutorial videos which show you everything you need to know.
Which is basically just how to open a scene, how to change the views, and how to use timeline and graph editor. That's it :)
All that is shown in their tutorial videos and really no big deal.

Animation is an art... that's what you will hear A LOT at AnimationMentor, it's about the principles, motion, thought process, etc., not about the software.

So, really, there is no need to worry about the software at AnimationMentor. :)

To add to what others said and hopefully put you more at ease, animating in max and maya is very similar. If you know maya well, it shouldn't take you more than a week to get used to animating in max.

Hey guys,
Im planning on applying to the Animation Mentor school. Same as Dave, I was wondering about learing Maya since I am using 3DS Max for over 7 years now, which had me worried. Im looking up the Maya demo as I write this, the biggest mix up will be in the shortcuts.
Still thanks for the info, seems its not going to be that hard to adapt.

Cheers!
