I was wondering if anyone knew how to create a good material for an led. So far the closest I've been able to come up with is setting the material to highly reflective and adjusting the emit value. This works, at a distance, but I'd like to know if anyone has any better ideas.

I'm creating a camera like the one shown here (http://www.kpbtech.com/60-led-bullet.htm)

so....do you want to make it look like it's emitting light, ie is already lit, or exactly as in that picture?

if you want to make it look like it's glowing then you are on the right track: use a medium-low value.

then in the compositor you can layer different amounts of blurs, glows and glares (don't go too ott though heh heh..) on top. I struggled with this for ages until i realised that some things simply have to be done in post.

I'm a bit afraid of blenders compositor lol. All the node examples I've seen look like bizarre schematics for an electronics design I've never seen the likes of lol.

Anyway I've been working with it a bit and have gotten something I think is pretty close. I'm trying out different ways of making it a little bit better...but my touch up work sucks lol.

Heres what I've got so far with nothing added other than what I've been able to tweak in blender.

I did this by creating on object with 2 different materials. The "diode" is set to max emittance and the shell is set to about .7 if I remember right. Then I just screwed with the shells IOR and shaders untill I got tired.
