southparx 05-18-2009, 08:53 AM Hi everbody,
I thought it's time to take the plunge and create the long postponed Sketchbook thread,
a quick introduction - I've been a 3d addict for the past few years and spent many many hours learning 'buttons' ... and left my artistic skills suffering all these time;
but I plan to go back to drawing and improving - starting from the very fundamentals of art which is figure drawing and my interest in anatomy - hopefully will lead to digital painting and sculpture in the future - but I will stay focused on the basics for now
With that out of the way, I still need to go and buy a scanner tonight and will upload my humble drawings afterwards
To a new beginning...
~cheers,
Andrew

i always got plenty of these and hate myself for being a lazzy bugger
also just talked to a friend and to quote him when i said i almost never get back to a drawing and redo it if i hate it halfway, he said
"if you don't correct things your missing out on a huge learning experience; its like driving then getting lost, but you keep going"
very good analogy and i guess i gotta push myself out of my comfort zone

Hi southparx, you have a really nice portfolio and it's good to have you join. :)
Your drawings are very nice, lots of great things happening! It will be interesting to see the direction you take your drawings once you feel you've gotten back into the swing of things, but all of the right ingredients are there. If I might suggest something, it might be to introduce a little more boldness / and swinging gesture into some of the drawings...to really push the feeling of confidence in them. I think that will be one of the extra ingredients that will really "sell" the drawings - make them convincing as forms of expression.
Great stuff, keep posting! :)

Hi Andrew, welcome! :) I also did the stop drawing thing for too long and regretted it, but I feel as if I'm getting back on track now, and I'm sure it wont be long till you do too. You seem to have some strong foundations, so keep building on them. Good luck!

Hi Miss Rebecca,
thank you for the kind words and suggestion.
Hi Samjanssen,
thanks the rugby 'half-drawing' is copied from Hogarth's drapery book. the book is super awesome~
Hi Maladie,
thanks it is just something sitting in front of me when i was looking for something fun to draw with pen after reading this book by Arthur Guptill http://www.amazon.com/Rendering-Pen-Ink-Techniques-Illustrators/dp/0823045293
(http://www.amazon.com/Rendering-Pen-Ink-Techniques-Illustrators/dp/0823045293)
Hi Aviva,
hmm to say that i have strong foundation could insult everybody here hehe -
I did went to an art uni and finished foundation there but back then i wasn't into art as much as i did these few years..
anyways,
I been trying to interpret what Ms Kimmel means about adding some swinging gestures and boldness to the strokes - so I read the article 'Opposing Curve' she wrote and tried drawing one of the images in it - but i'm still terrible at it
http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f310/southparx/Sketchbook/DSC00159.jpg
then i decided not to stop easily on bad drawings, i went to the park across and enjoy the outside while drawing this cast from a book i bought
http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f310/southparx/Sketchbook/DSC00157.jpg
first week next month i will be attending a cast drawing class ( no life drawing in that campus ) so i'm really excited hehehe
cheers,

06-09-2009, 02:42 PM
i decided to redo the second head,
this time i am focusing more on the upper part ( and i believe i'm not skilled yet to do the whole fabric area )
also this time i am sort of 'cheating' by aligning my image exactly side by side and pulling many guides, overlaying the image and checking it by turning it on/off every now and then ( but i'm not tracing of course )
the reason i did this is i wanna improve my sense of likeness and
boy i really suck at it
oh well here is today after a few hours, still has a gazillion things to fix but it is a better start than previous version

still at the point of matching the landmarks as close as possible to the reference, still plenttyy to fix but i think he is at a point where he doesn't look 'asian' right now at least hahaha
also i've been noticing these past two days, i tend to draw more narrow and above ... hmm wonder why?

this one is actually based on Philippe Faraut's DVD vol 1, an amazing traditional sculptor whose technique is really really simple yet the result is beautiful

well as always critiques are more than welcome

thanks MaoZao, yeah u're right - I really look forward to that day but for now i'm holding my horses and really wanna get my basics right hehe
anyways yesterday i was reading Selwy's (http://www.selwy.com/) archive where he said he usually draw first before he started his sculpt,
and i did just that, trying to feel the contour of the object
and i think by far this is a sculpt i did that i like most
although i still cant hit likeness but i start to feel comfortable with the application ( i still like pencil most )

Very good zbrush studies! I think in the last work you can try doing the intermediate forms (eyebonwa, akulla, mouth etc) more pronounced, i.e. more extruded as the whole form looks a bit flat for now. You already added details but this intermediate form could benefit from adding more volume.
southparx
07-02-2009, 07:41 PM
Hi Mister3D,
you're absolutely right - i noticed the model feels really flat and looking at my stuffs they suffer this too,
so i did a quick sculpt just to try to be more daring in defining the forms - no detail here coz i got only a bit of time today to play with zbrush

the green hulk is of Alex Oliver just for a quick reference

this is much much more fun than i thought hehe
my friends pointed out that the skeleton is a bit out of proportion:
- the tibia and fibula is too short and the femur is a bit too long
- the skull from side view is too big
gonna fix these tomorrow, if you guys can point out more mistakes please do tell :)

i think his spinal cord looks too thick, but other than that i can't really spot much more, perhaps someone with some more knowledge than me could help you some more. Compare it to some skeleton reference and you'll probably be able to spot a few stuff.
southparx
07-14-2009, 05:48 AM
Hi MaoZao,
thanks you're right the spines are much too think,
so here are the fixes done: spine, skull, width of jaw, size of hand, lower leg bones proportion... these are the things i can spot right now so if anybody thinks something else is not right please do tell
http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f310/southparx/skellyFIX.jpg
and continuing on the muscles, added serratus and external oblique
http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f310/southparx/obliques.jpg
wanna try to do my best so i can get this guy printed ^^
anyone knows 3d print service in Shanghai - China? hehe
southparx
07-14-2009, 10:57 AM
so i ran to the supplement store and get this guy some Hydroxycut coz he was too bulky ^^
http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f310/southparx/slender.jpg
actually Alex Oliver was kind enough to give me some critiques and one precious point he mentioned was the muscle was too big -
so i took a better look at Zack Petroc's video and also some ecorche from Rey Bustos and realized how muscles are actually pretty close to the bone - while mine, especially his trapezius was wayy too thick
so made him more slender - no new muscle done yet and i noticed the radius and ulna is too big due to the previous sizing of the hand
still doing and fixing along the way, so if you guys spot something off it's greatly appreciated
~cheers,
andrew

good updates Andrew, always a good think to listen to people like Alex Oliver. The trapezius sure looks better now. I his jaw could be a little wider.
keep it up
batte812
07-15-2009, 07:36 PM
Ji Andrew, great work on that ecorche. You made some good corrections in the proportions. The head still looks a bit too big in my opinion. But it must be a great exercise to improve your knowledge of anatomy for sure. Keep going!
southparx
07-15-2009, 07:55 PM
Hi MaoZao,
thanks for the crits, i fiddled with the jaw a little but will focus more when i get to the muscles of the head but thanks i will keep your point in mind
Hi Batte812,
thanks for your crit.. hmm i kinda feel the head is too small :P
maybe because everyday i look at myself and i have narrow shoulder..
gonna double check when i get to the muscles of the face,
but yeaa doing this ecorche is yet rewarding and actually funnn
anyways i bump into an area which is very alien to me,
the teres major, minor and the surrounding muscles...
http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f310/southparx/teresmajor.jpg
the left is screen capture from Zack Petroc's, he grouped the muscles around this area which i think is great, but perhaps someone can chime in as to confirm if my shape is already correct?
i looked at many reference both illustration and photos and they vary really greatly...

nice to take a break from your work from time to time. You should work on more projects at a time so you could switch when you get tired of one of them.
I like the definition you put into your model, i wonder what brush settings and stuff you use. I can't really define that well the forms, they are never that sharp. Maybe it's a subdivision level thing i don't know. Anyways, just keep in mind not to creat a gab in between the muscles where there is not one, like that guy's abs. The muscles sit too far apart, probably his pectoral muscles are to far apart also.
southparx
07-22-2009, 04:11 AM
Hi Gabriel,
yeaa but i try to limit my 'side-projects' to minimum since i am that kind of guy who has to do things one at a time and if too much things going on at one time, i might end up finishing none - which happened a lot in the past. i guess everyone works differently and we just need to figure out whats best for ourselves
regarding the ab muscles sit too far apart - yeah i guess i over exaggerated it too much - but real world person does have that kind of ab
http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f310/southparx/body_builder_21sfw.gif
i was a bodybuilder fan for long time and this guy is Ronnie Coleman - 6 time Mr Olympia - i sometimes think his muscle shape is not symmetrical and pretty but the guy sure got MASS hehehe
anyways about the brush setting - nothing special really - brushes that i commonly use is move-smooth-clay-claytube (defalt square alpha)-standard (with alpha: usually circular with featherd edge like alpha 35 to 51)-inflat/magnify
if you really want to know how the brushes work i highly suggest you check out this tutorial by Ryan Kingslein
http://gnomonology.com/tutorial/243
Also recently i realized, using the Move brush - there are advantages in shaping the vertex in lowest/lower levels really helps creating less 'bloby' look
http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f310/southparx/Untitled-2.jpg
http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f310/southparx/Untitled-3-1.jpg
and actually you get 'more' out of your subd levels, that bodybuilder is even though at 900K it doesnt look bad at 200K... in the past i always sculpted up to at least another level above the 900k
http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f310/southparx/Untitled-5.jpg
another example is what im doing right now - my grandmother;
btw she is 94 years young this year and will live for another 94 years! :buttrock:
basemesh is from gnomonology Alex Alvarez, but that is at lvl 1 and i try to shape
the vertices as to the face's planes (if you have no division somewhere forget about details and attack the big shapes)
http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f310/southparx/Untitled-4.jpg
basically get the most mileage out of your lower levels
hope it helps :)

Hey Andrew, thanks for the info on the last post buddy.
I know that Ronnie Coleman guy, he is really massive. Wow i never noticed how his ab muscles sit so far apart. but even his don't sit as far as you modeled your's.
I'm going to try to get hold of that tutorial you linked me to, seems useful.
Looking forward to your grandma project :)

Hi Gabriel,
haha yeaa i didnt use reference just made it from memory
anyways here is my lovely Granny so far, would like to ask you guys if you have any crit before i move on to detailing
i'm liking it so far :P
http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f310/southparx/popo2.jpg
hmm just realized - she looks a bit too sad at the moment so that im gonna fix..
if this turns out great i think i'll be printing this one instead as a gift hehehe
so guys, let the critiques come
cheers,

Whoa, pretty awesome ZBrushing. Granny looks really good, can't think of anything to fix other than the too sad thing you mentioned.
Do you rig your models in some point (sorry if you've mentioned it somewhere, I just quickly browsed through and didn't read everything)?

what do you think guys?

Hi Jho,
thanks for the kind words, no i dont rig my models - well at least not in this sketchbook
even if i do rigging i only know the very basics :P
anyways just wanna share in the sketchbook what other stuff that i've been busy with,
well i'm following a low poly challenge in 3D Total, and the theme is to make a famous game/comic/anime character into the opposite gender,

nice sculpting here! I like the granny - I'd say make much more asymmetrical and she'd be great.. the original reference has so much irregularity in her face...this is what makes her interesting :)

Hi Ms. Dadela,
I'm a BIG FAN of your worksss :))
especially the high priestess that you got printed, it is a very beautiful piece and an excellent choice for print
Thanks for the suggestion, yeah I will make her somewhat asymmetry but perhaps I'm gonna avoid doing a matching likeness since I feel for example her left eyelid is already drooping (is this a word?) too low so I'll take some artistic liberty to beautify some of her aged feature
But her Head sculpt might have to wait - work, life, the low poly challenge and sleep has taken all the time i have
Again Ms Dadela, Thanks for dropping a line in my humble sketchbook and keep us all inspired with your fantastic artworks :)
kindest regards,
andrew

http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f310/southparx/arm1.jpg
nothing much here,
havent put the details and the glove will have like honeycomb texture and some wrinkle, folds and whatnot - but i'm leaving it for later
next up im gonna do the body armor, should be fun :P

Love your SB thread. For the old womans face, You can try to make use of the inflate brush on the wrinkles with a gravity setting to make them look a bit more flowing.
