Random one day project I did yesterday:

Lighting is absolutely abysmal I apoligize, but one hour renders to fix didn't sound like much fun. Defocus nodes annoying me a bit, they seem to work bad on either BG or FG and never work for both... : / Base Material for Brushed Metal by Claas Kuhnen. Edit: almost forgot, yes I was inspired by the short film recently featured here on CGsoc"Reach". I had an idea for insect bots, and after watching his film some of the concepts just clicked I ran with it.

Hey, nice character! He'd make an interesting subject for rigging and animation.

It's things like this that inspire me and depress me that I haven't gotten off my ass to make much of anything yet. Excellent work!

Hey... those look pretty nice. :)

Strange triangle artifacts though at the hands.
Also shadows on the floor looks a bit strange.

I like the light inside the eyes/Cameras.

:)

Triangles are a Normal/material error result I think, can't be repaired very easily, ctrl N wouldn't do anything. Shadows on floor are a result of my bad lighting rig :P

It helps a lot if you can split the scene into separate fg/bg/etc render layers and defocus them independently. That was you also have the 'behind' pixels that can be blurred properly behind foreground elements.
