Speedtree is awesome. Polygonal tree makers are beautiful, but rendering is a nightmare, especially for animation. Speedtree has an impressive mapping method, which could be done easily with maxscript to some extent, but then you get a nice library of trees to start with too, plus a decent interface.

natFX gets some favorable reviews also, but I haven't spent any time with it to speak of.
