How do you make a instance of your model right next to the model you're working on, but the instance is mesh smoothed so you can see what the final product looks like when you're working?

I did it once, but now when I try it again, I can't seem to figure it out.:surprised

Copy/mirror your object as a reference. Now you can add a meshsmooth modifier to the referenced object without affecting the original object.

That didn't work. I want to be able to still work on the original object, and have the new meshsmoothed one mimic what the original does, only meshsmoothed.

The only way that either of the two methods described by Smay could not work is if you used the reference instead of the original for the modelling... check it out. :)

Well, here's how I'm doing it. Ok, I take my object, and press the little mirror button. The one that looks like this => |>|<|

Then I click Reference, and Mirror IK Limits is checked, and I set the offset to whatever pleases me.

Then it makes a reference, with the new one selected. But as I meshsmooth it, it meshsmooths the original one as well.

OK.... A reference is a copy oo the original that if you alter the original.. it will take on those changes.. but if you alter the reference copy the original will not change.
Put the mesh smooth on your reference... mesh edit the original.
Any alterations in the original will pass on to the smoothed reference copy.
It's also probably better to do a copy than a mirror, as using mirror will send the changes to the opposite side of the model. :)

Ok, I got the meshsmooth part of it down. Thanks a bunch

However, I can't figure out how to do the part about making it a copy instesad of a mirror. If you pick copy, then it doesn't mimic the original, and if you pick reference then it mirrors automatically. BTW, thanks for all your help. I appreciate it alot.

I think you should try and make a date with the help files.
To copy an object..... select object and with one of the transform (move, rotate, scale) buttons presses, press shift key and click the cursor on the object. Alternatively go to menu and edit....clone. ........either way a dialogue box will pop up offering you radio buttons for : copy, instance or reference. Copy is a straight copy and neither effect each other after cloning. . Instance means that whatever you do to either happens to both and Reference means the 'echo' is one way.. if you alter the original the reference also changes but if you alter the reference only the reference changes.
You don't even need to really make a copy cos when you put mesh smooth on an object you can use the 'show end result' toggle to show or not show the smoothed verison.
The help files for Max aren't bad and you really ought to start looking at them.

xynaria has actually answered your actual question.

You want to copy the object as an "reference", not an instance.

Do that, and you can apply operations to the referenced object, and it will still inhearit operations from the original.

Ok, that worked. I wouldn't have thought to shift+click, cause in PS that means to add to the selection, and in max it's ctrl + click. So whenever I press shift+move, i just disregard it and move on.

Thanks for the help. I appreciate it alot.
