macdonaldj 07-17-2003, 10:38 PM I attach a WIP of a cake. Much better quality and bigger image here:

I would appreciate any comments/critisms/suggestions to improve it.
Thanks

That's a great start...
Modeling seems to be more or less complete.
I do have a few suggestions.
Texturing could use some more work. For example on the frosting... I would add some noise to its bump map, and also consider cracking it a bit... This type of sugar frosting tends to crack and break like dry earth a few days after a flood or rain.
The same goes for the rest of the textures... They are all too clean, a dead give-away of computer graphics.
Plate looks great, altough the way it reflects the flame is weird because from where I am looking at it, it seems as if the flames would be obscured by the cake.
As for lighting... Is it supposed to be lit just by the candles? It isn't completly clear.
Shadows aren't completly realistic... Look at the shadow I marked with a circle, if it was lit by 3 different flames from 3 different directions then that shadow wouldn't really look like that... Its edge is too hard.
Just a few things I noticed.

Thanks for the useful comments.
In terms of lighting, there's the candles themselves and an HDRI environment map. It's this map, not the candles, that are producing the reflection on the plate (and the spots of light further back in the scene).
Shadows should be realistic as I used a ray-tracer but it may just be that I need to make the light sources inside the candle flames bigger to soften the shadows further.
Thanks again. Nice to get some feedback :)
