Hi,

[Forgive this double-post from the postforum...]

I put a freestyle entry in Blochi's HDR challenge, at:

http://hdri.cgtechniques.com/~blochi/show.php?id=352

For those who haven't seen it, it is an HDR photographed scene, with CG elements added. the challenge is to make the CG and real elements mesh as well as possible.

Simulation scenes (where you use the provided objects and try to make it as real as possible) here:

http://hdri.cgtechniques.com/~blochi/show_list.php?free=16&showcase=1

And freestyle scenes here:

http://hdri.cgtechniques.com/~blochi/show_list.php?free=15&showcase=1

Rules and downloads here:

http://hdri.cgtechniques.com/~blochi/show_list.php?free=14

I started with Chris Bahry's file from this thread:

Hi Nick,

that looks fantastic! The Neanderthal head is quite shuddersome...
the eyes have that 'follow you around the room' quality. If he started talking, I think I'd probably run away screaming.

Is that Oren Nayar and Naki?

So when are we going to start up that Toronto user-group? ;)

This is really cool! I am trying it out myself. Still encountering some problems with getting the table to integrate into the background more....
This is good fun :)

I fiddled with the settings some more and achieved a seamless blend into the background with these material settings for the table mat:

I really like this! I think I am going to do some sort of animation with a character walking over the table or something :), this is one of the reasons you learn CG, to let people see you can 'make it real' . :buttrock:

Actually, I meant to set it to Oren-Nayer, but its phong...

And yes, thats good-old Naki; good SLA-spotting!

Thanks for posting the c4d file, Chris. It made getting going much easier!

Yes, we should start a C4D user group in TO. I could even host it at U. of T...

I see from your email that you are working for Bruce Mau now: Cool! Did you have anything to do with the hoardings at the MaRS construction site? I heard they were a Mau project, and i walk by it every day...

If you happen to be at Siggraph this year, I'm giving a presentation that includes use of C4D in a visualization context:

Best,

Nick

Hey Nick

That would be fantastic... I studied at UofT (I even considered applying for the BMed Comm program!!) and now I jog through University College to Queen's park in the morning. I have a small apartment on Oxford St., just outside of Kensington market.

heh :p thanks!
I have been with BMD for a couple years now. So far it has been an amazing, exhilarating, and totally exhausting experience. I worked on the hoarding with a female co-worker... the final art
for that thing weighed in at 30GB! It is going to be a really wonderful space.

EMOCAP... that sounds very interesting. Are you and your colleagues doing all of this in Cinema, or is there a lot of proprietary code as well? Unfortunately I am not attending SIG this year :( Will you be conducting any lectures in T.O? I'd love to audit!
