Hello,

I'm modelling a 1999 Honda Prelude, I'm almost finished with the body, and I have to model a wheel (see the pic). What technique would you use to model it, what approach whould I use, I have no Idea how to do it.

Any help would be appreciated.

I'd start from a disc with a proper number of subdivisions and start erasing the parts you don't need, subdividing others, extruding etc. Then throw everything into a HN object. :wavey:

rusman: i'm actually working on rims for my s2000 and thirdeye's idea sounds good... i've been starting from a plane and adding and extruding etc and came out ok but still not what i want...
i thought you did another car didn't you?

hey thirdeye, have you done anything with your mercedes ? i would like to see some closeups of the tires/rims without HN on and maybe show the front lights close up when rendered - when you have the time ! thx

I haven't still done the front lights, here's the mesh of the rims.

The main difficulty of this wheel is the fact that there are 5 "vents" in the wheel, but 6 lugs. You're going to have to address them as two separate sections, but make sure that the number of segments around the wheel is divisiable by both 6 and 5. So you'd start with a disc that's got 30 segments around, and then start chopping. Hypernurbs is your friend here, because there's just too much edge detail to get right by pulling points on 5000 polys.

to sebek27: yes, I was doing another car a 1992 Prelude, got bored of it, and started a '99 one. I'll post a pic of a '92.

to Thurd_eye: did you boolean out the holes for the lugs on your rims?

Hmmm, I really need to learn how to count past 4....

Yeah, you should try modeling one fifth of the wheel then, however many segments it takes, and then duplicate it 5 times around in a circle, and you're done. Sounds easy, right? I wish! Best of luck...

Before I spent the time modeling the holes I'd try starting with the basic saucer shape and boolean out the opening with Better Boole. If it turns out okay you'll have saved a lot of time; if not, you won't have wasted much time.

On a side note what technique did you use to model the car? I've been point modeling one but I'm having a bear of a time with the wheel well and hood edges.. it's been a pain to keep them smooth.
