If you have lost your tranform gizmo try pressing the Xkey. This is the default on/off toggle.
Yes, there are more than 32 materials availible. As long as they have a unique name you can have a ton of materials in a scene. You are only limited to seeing 32 in the mat editor at one time.

Assuming that you are running OpenGL or DirectX driver, Customize>Preferences>Viewports>Configure Driver
Change the texture resolution to the highest supported, check "Match Bitmap" checkbox for better resizing.
You can also play with the MipMap settings... Linear/Linear should looks pretty nice:

there is a checkbox at the botom of the viewport tab of the Preference Settings, says Transform Gizmo on/off.

I've been having a similar related problem lately where I loose the ability to type in my XYZ offset numbers at the bottom of the screen when doing a move command. I have to either open the transform type-in window (f12), or I actually have to click-drag-move in the viewport, then undo, and only then it allows me to type a value in. Kind of a pain when all I want is to offset something accurately.
This only started recently so I know somethings not right. I'm using 5.1. Any ideas?

I did not want to turn this on but I did... almost never need it.. but the thing is I cant seem to find where to turn it off.
can you guys help me out.
Iam not sure what its called so i could not find it in the manual.
I think it was the home key at one point but thats not it anymore.

sometimes I have that problem after cloning an object in max 4.2 ... I would have thought they fixed that by max5 ... oh well... anyway, after cloning an object, the transforms show whatever was the position of the last object before cloning or something... just act like you're moving the object, and press the right mouse button to cancel, which will get the transform spinners back to normal... it's probably similar to what you've been doing, but at least you know a possible cause, and the right-click-to-cancel trick :surprised

ok so what if my right-click doesn't work?? I've loaded several different UIs, and still nothing. I can right-click on spinners to reset to default values, but when right-clicking in the viewports to bring up the quads....nothing. :annoyed:
edit: ok I rebooted the machine. all is well now....

Thought I would contribut with something I found very anoying with the new gizmo in max 5.
To be able to scale two axises the same amount at the same time. Like one did in max 4.2 with the help of the gizmos litle handle in the top right.
Go into:
Customize->preferences->gizmos->check the Unifrom 2-axis scaling box.
This took me about a week to find. so thought I would help those who missed it.
Question?
My materials in max5 are a bit weird.. when I have made an opasity animation they still reflect light... if I don't go into the track view add a visulisation track and make the objekt completie inviseble with the help of that.. I thought that when one makes an objekt with 0 in opasity it shouldn't reflect light, or anything else for that mather... any one that can tell me why it still reflects light? In the F1 help there is a ref to this matter but it doesn't tell me how to make it "not light reflective"

The_Row... not sure if this will work (not that well aquainted with texturing as of yet) but if you make something not opaque it would be similar to making a piece of glass in that form, so if you have a reflection map, it will still reflect the whole shape, you just wouldnt be able to see the non opaque part. i would think that you could make a reflection map to rectify this problem (though i could be completely wrong and anyone can feel free to discredit me :hmm: )

may work.. but as of now the problem here is not that it reflect the whole object... but that it reflect the light in some frames only... it reflects light in some frames and not in others... wish makes the highlights go on and off like a disco light... :banghead: and it won't stop. A anti reflection map might fix this.. going run off to try but it shouldn't be like this any way....
The opasity is in the scene changde from 0-100 wich make me think that the reflection of the light should be either 0-100,100 or 0 for the whole animation and not like frame 1:on 2:off 3:off 4:on 5:off and random so on...

Can't you change the color of the verteces? Seems like I remember somewhere that you can. Maybe yours are set to black? That's about all I have to offer...

I find that when I make a spline and then copy it and then go into the vertex level of the copied spline, I can't see the vertices. I know they're there, I can select them, but the damned buggers just won't show themselves. note that this doesn't happen regularly, only when I think life is fair and just, then those damned vertices screw me over like a cheap drunk prom date.
it sometimes happen to mesh objects, but not as much as spline objects. btw, I use max 5.1

Think i just had the same problem, i kknow they're there but i cant slect them and even worse, if i for instance select an edge and chamfer it then go back to vertice level i can select the vertices I just created but not the other ones!!!

the way i fixed the problem of not seeing my verticis is i change my graphics options i had it on open gl so i changed it to something else.

Or perhaps you've got 'show end result' toggle on but nothing else in the modifier stack - only an editable poly/mesh? I always make this mistake when modelling and I delete the meshsmooth modifier (for whatever reason) but leave 'show end result' active... :shrug:

hmmmm you might have it so that your viewport doesn't show textures... unless it's object color you're talking about... it's possible that you have too many lights in your scene for the viewport to show it properly... assuming you have any lights in your scene, go to right click your viewport name and click Configure... and go to where it says Default Lighting and check that off... that might help ... if it doesn't, not sure what the deal is

'v' used to be the shortcut, but theres a button in the lower right panel that looks like a circle or similar... it will bring up a view rotation type gizmo :buttrock:

It's called arc rotate. also if you hold the button down and go to the white version (arc rotate selected object) it tends to help when work on something specific in a scene. also the yellow one is arc rotate sub object

I've got a question:
For some reason, my max help file won't load anymore. It opened fine last week, but yesterday, when I tried to reference something it wouldn't open. I get the hourglass cursor for a couple seconds then nothing happens. Can't load any of the help features. Any idea why?

Hyphen: It can be a redirection problem made by windows.. try defrag the hard drive if that don't work reinstall the help and tutorial section

Bitmaps aren't showing up in the viewport even when the option is activated. I have opened past projects that have bitmaps that showed up, and even they dont work now. Any ideas?

I have similar problem. I installed the newest driver for my nvidia and ..bang... no textures displayed in the viewport any more. With Open GL 1.1.0 worked fine (but slow), Open GL 1.4. messed it up :rolleyes:
Check you graphics driver. :D

I just reinstalled max.
Q: I just installed 3dsmax 5 and it runs really really slowly. I also have Norton Antivirus 2003 installed and autoprotect enabled.
A: Load up task manager whilst MAX is running and check to see what is using your CPU (Processes, arrange by CPU). If it's Winlogon.exe then you've got Norton antivirus installed? If you have you need to download the C-dilla 3.27 update from Discreets website...

Shortcut to toggle between four and one window is Alt+W.
As for your problem with the gizmos...
Have you tried changing the viewport graphics mode to software then restart max and see if it fixes it, then switch back to Direct X or OpenGL? That might fix it?
You may find that Max application files have become corrupt, in which case you'll need to re-install.

Does anybody know how to get back the 'indicators' you see in any viewport when you selected an object with Select and Move or Select and Rotate etc. to see what axis you are rotating, moving around. I have put an example in what my 'indicators' have changed in:

I've searched, but couldn't seem to find anyone with this problem...
When using the UVW Map modifier and a procedural texture, the rendered mapping of the object is different than the viewport mapping of the object, obviously making mapping quite a guess-and-check hassle :)

You might want to start your own thread for this. But perhaps it's something easy like checking the "show material in viewport" button? Hit M and it's one of those buttons in the center channel. Also perhaps right click on the viewport (where it says the words perspective) and set "texture correction" to "on".
Might do the trick.

set it to explicit map channel and you get the same in views and render.

This is because Wood is a 3D procedural texture.
Originally (read: Max 1.0), 3D textures could not be displayed in the viewports.
There was even a special versions of Noise texture called 2D Noise by Peter Watje which worked as a 2D texture and could be displayed in the viewports...
So somewhere around Max R3 the developers decided that having a wrong 2D representation of a 3D procedural texture in the viewports is better than having no representation at all, and they changed most 3D textures to generate a preview bitmap which is then sent to the graphics driver and shown as if it was a regular 2D bitmap texture. (Interestingly, Peter joined the Discreet team at that time,I wonder if there is any connection ;))
Obviously, the 2D version is just for reference, you cannot expect it to behave exactly as the "real thing", it is really not supposed to be the same. It does not generate colors in 3D space (where you can "travel" trough a 3D texture volume and watch the internal structure of the procedural map...)

hey im having some probs wiht my editable polies in max :( when i click on a primitive (ie anything that ISNT an editable poly) it works fine.. however when i click on an editable poly (or the editable poly part of a stack) the object disappears :\ it only comes back if i zoom in/out n play around until it reappears..
its getting quite frustrating having to zoom in and out a few times for it to come back.. only for it to disappear again
heres an example:
1st pic is object unselected... when i select it.. its still visible.. i click on polygons and it disapeears.. and you can see ive selected a polygon n thats visible but not the rest :|
any help?

Try changing the drivers seting.. can be that, or it can have something to do with your distansfog.. you now how object far away becomes inviseble, I'm guessing its a combination, I'm not surtain thou.. its strange how ever that it only effects edit poly... as I said try changing driver and then if the problems still there... get mad...

alright im getting angry now lol... ive started a new max file.. made a box n a sphere.. there both visible n fine.. once i convert them to an editable * (poly or mesh or etc) they go invisible... only the surrounding box around them is there.. in edit vertices mode the vertices are visible and the surrounding box but nothing else...
edge mode only surrounding box
same with poly.. selected poly/edge is visible in red...
ive had a look at the driver settings but cant see anything that seems wrong.. they havnt been changed and they worked fine before..
as far as i know i dont have any distanstfog... had a look for anything with that name n cant find it.. anyway im meant to check or anything?
this is so frustrating :\ any ideas?

ive got an annoying problem in max 7 where if im dragging an object using the arrows on the gizmo it snaps to the center of that axis, so if im in side view dragging an object around then look in another its stretched across the screen and is actually at the center.
in the right view it looks fine but on the top its moved to the centre.... AGHHHH!!

I hate that there are so many incarnations of its name. When searching, I find that it's best to refer to it as '3D max' (without the quotes). I've noticed that the word "studio" is more often than not dropped completely, and '3dsmax' isn't always the most popular choice. With '3D max' you can't miss!

However the product we are talking about is indeed 3ds max. That's what it says on the box, the manual, the splash screen, the top bar, and everywhere else! I don't understand why people insist on calling it "3d max." It makes my blood boil! :banghead:

When I put my mouse over a poly, surface disappear and i only see wires.
What's the trick to use snaps in the good way (generaly call:precision drawing). I have difficulty to use the align tool and to change the reference point of an object.

Is there any easier/quicker way to model a round shape on box for example, than just creating a cylinder and adjusting the vertexes as in the cylinder?
What's the shortcut for selecting for example edges, without the whole selection rectangle getting around it, sometimes Max selects all the edges that the rectangle touches and that's why I'm assuming there's a shortcut I accidentally press sometimes.

That's because it was dropped by discreet several versions ago. It's not been called 3D 'Studio' Max for years... it's officially called 3DS Max.

I have a problem: I have a scene, with lots of objects and a big concave mesh (mountain) I would like to remove all the objects inside/outside the mountain. Is it possible in max world? I don't have a clue how to do it! I think it could be a very easy, if I could select the object automatically, but I cannot do it. Is it possible via a plugin/maxscipt?

Hm, I don't really understand what you mean but I'll try it anyway:
1. You can Select ALL your objects in the scene except your mountain then apply a Volume Select Modifier. Then you use as selection method faces/verteces (I think both should work, you can try out) and define your mountain as the "selector" (there's a node, you just click on it and pick the mountain geometry). Now all objects inside the mountain have selected faces/vertices. Now, with the same meny objects selected (except the mountain) you just add the "Delete mesh" Modifier. The selected stuff disappears :-)
Did you mean that?
Or just the old "Delete"-Button Delete function? ;-)

Thanks, it really helped me a lot! The good old delete button does not work, it deletes all the objects, but the delete mesh modifier really does it well.
My only problem now: is it possible to delete/show not based on verticles/faces but on objects. Now my scene looks almost good, but I have a lot of sliced objects. Is it possible to remove objects which does not have closed surface? I tried to choose the object method in volume select, but it removed all the objects!

How can I use volume select modifier/object mode? It works for me in vertex/face mode, but in object mode it always selects all the objects I applied it to.

Hm, maybe the STL check Modifier? You can let it select all objects that are opened. And then you use the Delete Mesh Modifier again. As far as I can remember you could use the Volume Select Modifier on whole objects, I think it was the option above the vertices/faces mode... Not quite sure, whether it works fine though!

I got a question. At random times, my viewports will turn into this (see pics below). I have to maximize the viewport, then max back out and it will go away. Anyone know what causes this?

looks like your gfx card driver might be causing this. you might want to try out different versions - sometimes it improves alot.
also, you're using directx for your viewports, right? switch to opengl and restart max and see if it makes a difference.

i can tell what will happen, it will get waaaaayyy slower and will be buggy as hell, we totally switched to directX is with Version 5(or 7?), in 4 it was the other way around, openGL was faster and more stable, now that has changed... BUT direct X can't show double sided Materials in Viewport, i haven't tested this in Max8 yet, but i guess there is no change ;)

actually. that should depend on your graphics card and driver. for me, with max 4, 5 and 7 that doesn't apply at all. both viewport drivers are totally stable, opengl is slower but renders prettier, directx is faster but looks like crap - especially with alpha maps, double sided stuff, wireframe overlays and generally when zoomed out a bit.

the blue color indicates the last used command in the quad menu... it is very usefull! when click on the headline of quad, it will automatically run the "blue" (last used) command :thumbsup:

my objests in the viewport as well as rendering are distorted initially when i start them in the viewport for no reason .when i move them left or right they get lenthened towards the side they are moved .please tell me why and what to do .i have to send my spectacular 3d entry and i am getting this serious problem.

Hmm sounds strange, as I see, since my english is so and so, if u make a box u get a shape thats tilted if u move it, almost as you don't move all the polygons. I would probably understand better with a "before-after" image, but anyways as I ses the problem now, make sure everything is selected. Have you got ignor backfacing running? Then you won't move the polys thats facing "the other way", making you move your object in a strange way.

Hey guys... I explain you briefbly my problem...it's turning me crazy...
Ok, so when i am visualizing a mesh in my viewport and i have selected certain edges of the mesh it looks like if behind the selected edge was another edge more (and i have selected ignore backfacing ok? ;P...).
So, when i click again over the edge it select what look another edge cause i look the edge number and yes... is another edge... every one of both edges have a diferent edge number so it really seems we have two edges.
hum...but the problem is that when i move any of this edges the result is the same...both moves the same geometry in the same way so then it should be the same edge...
The worst is that it disturb me alot when i want to do visible some of this edges cause in certain possition i cant see them in the vierport.

I once had a simuöar project... there are as I see 2 ways of fixing this
the problem can be a, that the edge u have selected acculy goes past the vertex you think it stops as ie:
.___.___.___. <- the line in question with the window in the middle.. your edge goes like this
.___.___.___. and not like this .__.__.__. now this could be the problem...
since english is not my main language either you might have said you have looked if this is the case.
A nice way to see if there is anything overlapping is with the meshsmooth tool. since if to edges are in the same place the mesh will totaly f_ck up in that place.
I would recomend that you redo the polygons that dissaper once u have deleted the edge.
I think it is the fastest way instead of solving your current problem, delete whats wrong and redo it... it usaly solves my problems...

Hi!

I am rendering a scene in 3d studio max using Brazil 1.2.58.
It is a small button that I will use on a skinnable application (that changes color).
So the scene has a transparent background and I can save it just fine as png with Alpha on.
My question: how do I keep the really awesome shadows generated by brasil on a ground that is invisible? They are all lost when I remove brazils ground plane and/or the ground object from under the button.
So actually what I'm asking is.. how do I obtain an alpha-shadow?

:lightbulb A written mistake is 3ds max,s user renference there is given that "X" key is the shortcut of VIEW > Show Transform Gizmo but it is not right actually this is the shortcut of Customize > Preferences > Gizmos (panel) > Transform Gizmo section > On { at the left upper corner in panel}. I suggest to read the reference about the 3ds-file format. There are a few more differneces than 'having triangle faces' which is wrong by the way, polys in max consist of triangle faces too.

Ok, this has been annoying me for awhile now. I use the middle mouse button alot for the 'pan' tool. So I just click it and hold to pan my view around or I scroll it for the zoom. I think the scrolling is somehow screwing up the speed at which I can pan and zoom at, because right now on the thing I'm working on, it is taking hours just to zoom in on the stupid thing. Can someone tell me the easy way of fixing this damn speed switcher?

i just can't get what you mean with the speed switcher, but holding 'alt' while zooming/panning/moving etc. increases the steps by factor 10 (i think...) so maybe this could be useful to you.

Shortcut to toggle between four and one window is Alt+W.
As for your problem with the gizmos...
Have you tried changing the viewport graphics mode to software then restart max and see if it fixes it, then switch back to Direct X or OpenGL? That might fix it?
You may find that Max application files have become corrupt, in which case you'll need to re-install.

I am having a similar problem but my gizmos are toggled to on and so is my transform gizmo. I've tried changing the viewport graphics mode and back. I've tried puting im my Max disc and reinstalling and still nothing, does anyone have any other suggestions?

I select an object in 3dmax. it takes 3-4 seconds before that object is selectable (meaning i can rotate/scale/translate it). this occurs frequently. even in unshaded mode and isolation mode. I'm running a P4/3ghz with 2gb ram, radeon 9800, windows xp. My drives are fragmented, there's only 31 processes running in the background, no viruses and no spyware.
Other examples of slowdowns include
- 5-10 seconds to clone any object
- 3-10 seconds to switch in/out of isolation mode
this could be due to the extreme amount of plugins i have installed on my computer (i'm working at video game company). but since every artists' computer is basically the same, and i'm the ONLY one with these slowdowns, it's a bit unsettling.
any help would be appreciated.

In vertex mode, sometimes absolute transformation coordinates are grayed out, when I select multiple objects/verteces. I cannot have all verteces set to 0! What can I do?

I am a newbie using 3ds max and I have a question. My "select and move" (axis) tool is usually at a size that I can see and easily work with. Today I opened up 3ds max and the select and move tool is so small that I cannot make out the separate x,y,z axis'. Please, if anyone knows how to enlarge my select and move tool I would greatly appreciate it. There's probably an easy way which I am completely unaware of.

Hi all I have a problem with the gizmo in 3dsmax 9 I recently passed from 3dsmax 8 to 9 and I have a problem ....
befoure when I was modelling and I needed to move an object or vertexes or planes etc , I could pass on the 3directional arrow ortogonals gizmo used to move the object , with the mouse , and it suddenly made the whole mesh transparent with edges visible and so I could work well , now in 3dsmax 9 it is no more doing this , I dunno if it is a matter of setting or something and I would like to place back this feature can you help me ?

Is there anyway to fix the aliasing on the wireframe lines within the viewport? They look pretty jagged in a user view! In a perspective view they look a little better but I was wondering if there are any settings that will make the wireframes look cleaner and more crisp while modeling?
I thought it may also be due to the monitor or my video card but I'm not sure. I'm using a Dell E197FP LCD flatpanel monitor with resolution set at 1280X1024 with an Nvidia 7300 LE pci express x16. 512MB
I've attached a screenshot of what I'm talking about, you can see how the lines are broken and very jagged!
If anyone has any knowledge of this please help! Thanks!

and check the "Enabble Antialiased Lines in Wireframe Views" checkbox
and that's it.
Design Diva:
go to 'preferences' - 'gizmos' tab , and increase 'transform gizmo size'.
the keyboard shortcuts are - (minus) : decrease size, = increase size (but this doesn't work on my laptop keyboard..)
Spooky experience to see your gizmo shrinking...(it has been for me):D

I have the exact same problem.
Only for 2 days of render. (yes, I should have done it to sequence tgas or such, but I was going out and didnt think it matered).
Im supprised there isnt more info about this, it must be fairly common problem ;-/
Mine stoped at 95%, leaving a 65MB mov file, a QTimeTmp.AVI, and a temp.mov.#res.
I havnt a clue what they are really.
Is there any way to recover the render?
Sure there must be a method to just render the last 5% of the file and slap it together?

Usually, rendering to a video file is big no-no ...
Quite dangerous, and rendering to images dosen't take much time to recomposite after :deal:

AndyI might suggest that it is appearing off screen. If you dig through the ini files in the max folder you should be able to come across the dialog position and update them to place them back somewhere on screen.
See how that goes.

I seem to be having problems when extrude modelling from scratch. I'll be working on a segment of the model and when I retrace my steps I find that there are double vertices all over the place. Any ideas why that might be happening? Also, in connection with this problem, does anyone know how to connect an edge to a stray stand-alone vertice. I've been told that you're supposed to use the "create" command when in the edge sub object, but I haven't had any luck with that.

I started learning max this week. I have been using maya for a while and for the most part have figured out how to translate my work flow from maya to max. Not to hard at all. There is one thing I still can't figure out though.
When projecting / unwrapping your uvs, is it possible to type in a numeric value for their hight and width? For example, in maya when I do a planer projection I can type in a value for the projection width and projection height. This way I now all of my projections are the same size. I don't have to eyeball anything.
In max it seems to me that it is just fitting the projection in the uv space without regaurd to size and then I have to scale all the uv pieces to be the right size. Im I doing something wrong?

Hello, i have a question about placing and modeling details...i hope it´ll be understandable:)
Example: I´m modeling somesort of knight armor, and i want some pretty details on it, i can handle the modeling itself, but my issue is situated in the modeling details by other models (armor has a eagle pn front of it, but eagle was modeled alone by splines and afterwards it was converted to edit poly and knight armor was modeled by box modeling from scratch and it has different topology, which i dont want to destroy, so i create two different elements, which they are penetrated by theirselves.I cant find out how i would place the eagle softly to armor to make a nice piece of armor with great eagle:) .. path constraint is not the best method to animate the main car if you plan to adjust speed and such at some points in your animation... but to the point - yes there is no way to work with bezier keys with path constraint controller (atleast I don't know of any) but you can manualy add more keys in curve editor to make the effect you need... maybe there is a way to make nice and precise animation with path constraint but I would suggest you use motion/trajectories+curve editor to make the best looking effect or try to find some cool car animation plugin...

Thanks that worked for the translate, scale, and rotate. However, I don't get any other gizmos. For example I tried to apply a taper to a piece of geometry, but no gizmo appeared.

So here's a max question, why did Autodesk decide to release 3dsmax 2009 earlier this year when 3dsmax 2008 didn't come out just that long ago? Was there really a purpose for this?..I was expecting max 2009 to be coming out in the fall this year. Are there any differences among the two in the first place? I'm wondering if biped would be a good solution for this? Are there limitations I should know about? Can I rig with biped and animate just like that? If so, can I save out the animations for reuse, use them on other characters, etc?

Hi everyone. Just started 3dsmaxing a few months ago, so I'm still crap. One problem has been with me continuously throughout my attempts at learning 3dsmax (JPost said something similar in an earlier post, but I haven't been able to find a solution).
Whilst pressing the middle mouse button down (and using ALT) to pan and zoom around, I've noticed that I have no particular control over what the viewfinders main focus is! Sometimes I'll select an object and it will automatically be centered as the focal point (so panning and zooming around it is easy); however sometimes something random is just in focus (like the grid or some complete other object and not the selected one) and I don't know how to switch the focus back onto the selected object. I end up panning and zooming for several minutes just to be able to get the view to a workable place - it's absolutely killing me sometimes!.
Anyone know if there is a button or shortcut to force the viewfinder to focus on the selected item and keep it in the center of focus?
sorry for the mangled explanation, it's difficult to explain without pointing one's finger at the screen and raging lol.

In the bottom right corner you have all your navigation controls. The one you're looking for is called Orbit (right of the hand icon). If you click and hold over it, you'll get 3 types of orbiting. The gray colored one orbits around the world center, the white one orbits around a selected object and the yellow one orbits around the selected sub-object component. For more info, type 'orbit' in the 3ds max help.

I know i had it. I know i got it somehow from here. I've searched on here and google and so forth but i just can't find the bloody plugin. It takes your uvw map and exports it as a series of splines which makes texturing totally awesomecore easy.

so fellow artists I also have al litte problem
I started 3ds max today to keep on working on my first model, but just after I hit the meshsmooth mod I had to realize that all my 4edged polygons broke into triangles (even before meshsmooth but meshsmooth indicated that something was not correct).
So it seems that I did something completely wrong yesterday night, drowsy as I was.
But I just can remeber my workflow and I am sure that I did not apply any filter or modifications!
So could you tell me:
how this could have happended so that I can avoid it another time
and if its possible to undo this step when there is no history available.

Thank youThis is actually a relatively simple issue and an annoying one...cause it's kind of buried in the options...
Goto Customize->Preferences
Click on the Viewports tab and click "configure driver"
In the "Appearance Preferences" group, make sure the background texture and download texture size are the same...personal I prefer 512, but this kind of over kill...
Also, make sure that "Match Bitmap Size as Closely as Possible" in both groups are selected.

Ok stupid question here, so I figured this is the thread to post it in since it relates so closely to the original few posts.... ;)
I know adaptive degradation is one of those annoying features that most low poly modelers dread after accidentally hitting O and not realizing it.
Well, my client on an architectural rendering project has me slicing a stupidly high poly 3d version of their building one floor at a time through hundreds of little pieces so they can render it one floor at a time in cutaway views. All was going well once I figured out I could save time (and booleans) by merging all the objects that shared materials.
Suddenly to my horror, adaptive degradation stopped working! I press the O key to no avail. I fiddle with the settings under viewport configuration. Nothing works, it just doesn't degrade anymore. I even checked my UI settings to make sure O was still the hotkey.
Any ideas why adaptive degradation would stop working and how to get it back? The model is a bit over 2 million polies and it's a real pain to rotate around the thing without it! :D
Edit: To further answer the previous person's question in this thread, 3dsmax for some reason best displays textures that are proportioned in powers of 2. If your texture is not in a power of 2 ratio, it WILL resample your image, no matter how closely you tell it to match your resolution. The simplest solution is to resize your image in photoshop to a power of 2 in its longest dimension, then change canvas size to that same power of 2 in the shortest dimension. So a 2560x758 reference image would be resized to a 2048x2048 or 1024x1024 image. It'll display flawlessly every time. Also, Max doesn't like resolutions higher than 4096x4096.

Hi there,
I just designed a nice quaint character that I'm hoping to texture and animate. However, the UV unwrap modifier seems to have a vendetta against me. Every time I unwrap a few polys and save a UV template, the thing resets the UV's to the way they were before once I render. I'd texture in zbrush, but this is not a viable solution for things like bump maps and whatnot.

Are you rendering to texture? If so make sure "use existing channel" is checked. Otherwise it'll do an automatic unwrap, undoing all your hard work on the UVS.

Another thing to look out for is making sure you're not in sub-object mode when applying the uv map. If you are, it'll only unwrap the selected polies, and if you change your selection it'll whipe out the UV map. If it is your intention to only unwrap a few polies, be sure to either collapse the stack or add an edit poly modifier afterward and not go below it on the stack.

I'm having a small issue. The last time I did this was years ago so I can't exactly remember where it is. You know how there is a max text file that tells max the screen coordinates for all of your floating menus. I've "lost" (like if u use dual monitors, switch back to one and forget about your floating menus thus leaving your menus location on the now non-existant second monitor) one of my floating menus (FumeFX) and I just can't remember what the text file was called. Because in the past I'd just go into the text file and change the coordinates back.
Silly question I know.

I'm pretty new to 3ds max and i'm having an issue with the pro materials. At first I thought they were just messed up as they weren't showing up when I selected them in the materials editor, but after some investigation I found they were there but considered "incompatible".
I don't know why they would be considered such so does anyone know how to fix this?

Pro materials are compatible only with mental ray, so you need to assign mental ray as a renderer in order to be able to use them.

I currently consider to enhancing my gear from 3 go ram+ winxpsp3 32bits (3dMax 8 32 bits) to 6 go ram + windows7 64bits (and max2010 64bits)
My worry is that the current WIP I ve started on Max8 32bits will not translate well in Max2010 64bits
has anyone experience such transition in the middle of a work, am I stuck with Max8 till the end of this one?

No problem. All 32-bit files can be opened in 64-bit. I run 3dsmax 2011 on Windows 7 64-bit and it run perfectly.

lets say i animated a door opening, and a window opening, and i want to play them separately.
is that possible?
hiding animation layers is the only answer i have so far, but it isnt
the best method, since i'd have to hide all my other animations, when i
wanted to play only one anim. also, switching the play button to play
selected wont do it, as everything else will disappear, but keep moving
invisibly, instead of keep showing/not move.
any ideas?

Me personal would probably not buy HP. The price for their workstation is way more then if you buy a none brand workstation.
There are lot of shops that specialized in workstation and they give you way more service and value for your money. Or you can build it yourself (if you know how) with loose components, that's by far the cheapest option.
For the hardware. It seems kind of low, I can't look in your wallet, but you might want a bit more power.
The i5 processor should be a i7 or more (xeon, 4 or 6 cores)
4 GB of memory is on the low side, especially with rendering and working in big scenes 8 GB or 12 GB would be better.
For the Graphic Card I would not take an ATI. I know the're cheaper and promise more, but Autodesk seems to lean more towards Nvidia (physx, massfx). So it would be a good idea to switch that. If you have the money buy a quadro, they make less errors and are build for a big workload.
monitor looks oke, I'd like 2 screens on my workstation, but as I said I can't look in your wallet.

first i have 16 GB memory but max starts to lag at big scenes but uses just 4-5 gigs, why does it happening?
second is there any solution for displaying shortcuts when i move my coursor upon a tool?

I you video card that's lagging. Heavy scenes need a heavy duty card.
As for the shortcuts, that should work.

I think I must be asking this the n-th time. But then. hehehe. ;)
I have 8 GB of RAM and a 64bit windows 7 and 64bit Max2010. But for some reason max is using only 4 GB and I cant seem to find the toggle/configuration settings for it. I think that now the algorithm is automated, which is to say that it can not be manually configured, but then I also think that I could be wrong. thats a good one] but could you guys please help me out. It would be a great help. Thanks a Ton.

Is it possible to disable the cycling behavior of "Q", where it cycles between the different selection regions (rectangular, circular, etc) every time you press it? I find this feature highly annoying, as I rarely use anything other than rectangular.
