View Full Version : HMC #20 Expressions - Bill Murray

Ok, i'm going for Bill Murray...I think he is very charismatic and a brilliant actor. His subtle expressions say more than a 1000 words.

Its my first proper attempt to do a digital double, so any tips to get the likeness right is mucho appreciated ;) Looks like a lot of talent is joining this challenge, so this could be interesting!

Here is some reference material

And here is a first screengrab. I started sculpting last night from a very simple base head based on the reference I gathered. It's probably more tricky to get the likeness right than poly by poly modeling with front and side image planes, but I find this method just more fun! I'll just retopo later then when I'm satisfied with the sculpt.

Good luck everybody! I'm sure this will be an awesome challenge!

Nice. Bill is awesome. I think you got most of it right. Maybe slope the eyes down more.

Nice sculpt..( I think the eyes are too close together.. leaving too much space on both sides..)

great so far.

i agree with Brett and thablanchh tho and my 2pence would be that his forehead is too high, but like i said, great start!

nice progress here! I'd say the face feels like it's sloping towards the back too much forming too much of a triangle at the mo... would bring the cheeks a bit forward on either side of the head... hope that made sense...

hey Intervain, thanks for dropping a line! It definitely makes sense what you are saying. Next update coming soon...

Sweet start man, definately recognisable. The thing that I see is the width of the head at eye level and above - it could be too much. As a general guide, a head is about 5 eyes wide at that level - 2 being the actual eyes, one eye inbetween them, and 2 either side of that. It's quite hard to tell from your ref how close Murray comes to that in reality, but based off that black and white shot, I'd say fairly close.

Of course, if you have perspective turned off for those shots, then that would account for it too.

It's worth taking a look at the shape the hair makes from the front view, though. See where his sideburns are, on the photos they angle in a bit first before curving out, whereas they're more straight up on yours - pulling in some mass would help with that too.

Hmm seems I'm not that as good at giving concise crits as Intervain :) Like I said, I'd recognise him from the sculpt, so it's a great start.

Hey Lord McGoat, thanx man. You were totally right about the width of the head.

ok, here's another update on the sculpting. Moving slowly and lost likeness a few times, but this is the closest I got so far I think...I got to a certain point that I just dont see it anymore, so would love to hear what you guys think...
cheers;)

Excellent work, overall the sculpt has the proportions fine, but just the forehead is a bit up. (just down a bit the start of the hair might help) compare it with your references and you will see, is not to much.

I have to agree, it looks like theres a little too much forehead and the eyes are a tad too close together...

I had the same remark about the head as stridiggio. Best is to check the proportional relation between certain distances.
Another little remark: do you constantly check or sculpt in an orthographic view? When i sculpt i hate that view cause we never see things that way. Maybe you need to check it in perspective and see what you get then.

And in my opinion: do you use pure sculpting tools to constantly change and shape the head? If this is so, i recommend trying some use of the move tool and the pinch tool. You'll do less damage to your detail when you try to change things.

cheers and much fun. It's a drag to get it to look just like him.

- stridiggio, iatethecrayon ; Thanks for the comments guys! cheers

-Nothingness; I don't like the orthographic views myself too much, I prefer to sculpt in perspective. My main brushes are the standard, clay, claystrokes, move, pinch and inflat.

A little update. Fixed some proportion errors. This should do it for now, time to move on and start retopolising. Yeeij! :)

Looking good mate. This made me think of Steve Zissou! IMO Bill Murray's best roll.

- RageOfAges: thanks man. Life aquatic is awesome, though not my favorite Murray movie :)
I'd go for Broken flowers and lost in translation, he just can't be more 'Bill Murray' in those movies :)

Intervain: Thank you!

So, started with the retopo, here's a first wip.

Nice topo so far. Are you using topogun?
Man I heard they making a ghostbusters 3. I hope so.

I agree bout the forehead:).

Yep, nice topo so far. But the likeness isn't as good as the topology. I'd concentrate on it more after the retopo is done. Keep going! :)

Looks great so far. I think the picture on the top right of your reference sheet is the one with the most character and probably the one that will give you the best expressions. Other than that you've definitely nailed the likeness

- Hey Rasmus, thanks for dropping by man!

- BrettSinclair; thanks dude. I used 3dcoat for retopo. No topogun for me, I'm on mac.
But from what I have seen, I think 3d coat has most of the retopo tools as
topogun. I'm actually quite fond of the software, just try to ignore its slimy
interface :)
Ghostbusters 3? For real? maaaan, I hope Ivan Reitman will be director
again at least....Although he didn't do much good since
last ghostbuster.

- nfuchs; thanks. retopo is about done, so will concentrate on likeness soon again.

- d8D; thank you

ok, was abroad during the weekend so didnt have much time to work. Almost finished the retopo. Still need to open mouth and model inner mouth. Ears and eyes could use some more polys.
