Hi there,

I've been working with 3D for a few years now and while I've primarily worked in C4D, I have recently been learning to use 3DS Max.

I mainly produce Architectural Visualisation but play around with character stuff now and then which I really enjoy.

I've been using the Digital Tutors series for learning Max and they are fantastic, however, like many other training providers I have noticed they lack a specific instructional DVD on texturing.

Right from the start of my 3D work this has been the one area where I suppose I feel I have lacked knowledge and ability, 99% of my learning how to use textures/materials has come from just messing around with them. I know this is fine, although I would really like to properly learn all aspects of proper texturing techniques if you see what I mean.

I think my question is geared more toward environment and Architectural texturing since character texturing is obviously done in a different way (or at least it is when I do it!).

So does anyone know of any proffessional (when I say pro, I mean along the lines of Digital Tutors or Gnomon Workshop) training DVD's or even books that focus solely on texturing? Texturing is often covered lightly in other instructional material such as rendering lessons, but never in as much detail as I would like.

Many thanks

I'm on the same boat, I'm having real problems on this terrain I'm trying to texture. I was doing UV's on it, but i have all kinds of seams and I don't know how to use body paint to get rid of them.

Unfortunately, as you've discovered, texturing is not a very widely covered topic in available tuition. I really don't know why, but there are virtually no books on the subject, and certainly no new books for that matter. Unfortunately I don't know what to recommend, other than reading about the basics and just practising

There aren't really a whole lot of texturing secrets or special techniques in texturing. Every artist has their own little habits in Photoshop and such, which you develop over time. I'd recommend you learn Photoshop very well, and learn how to work well with editing photos for a start.

crick2x9, in Bodypaint you use Projection Painting to paint over seams.

Hi, just saw this. browsing through...

I would recommend looking for tutorials on how to make tiling textures from photo's and make a library with tons of different textures, especially in arch viz. something like that is quite a treasure.
Other than that, I work in games and real-time 3d and there textures are very important since you'll try to cut back on most detail in the mesh and the size of your texture.
I would want to recommend the eat3d dvd's which are rather good at next gen game objects with a specific texturing dvd. (personally I think the method used is kinda dirty, but the result look so damn sexy)

Most of the time I use tiling textures with dirt and detail overlays to texture non characters... well basicly I start characters that way too :p
And if I handpaint my (noncharacter) textures I usually have quite a good idea of what it should have in shapes... I quite often use noise and cloud filters to make things more natural and in photoshop I use layerstyles all the time to flesh shapes out... quite often just painting in black and doing the rest in layerstyles.

Hope that helps you looking for other tutorials on the net. and you can always show us a wip of course then we can help you achieving your dream :)

If your using max try the cg academy site there are three dvd's there for texturing ranging from beginner to advanced.

Thanks Leigh, I'll try that. Haven't found much documentation on BodyPaint.

Just got round to checking this thread again and thanks for the replies!

I will check out the cgacademy stuff, Max is in fact the package I want to learn more about texturing in.

Thanks again.

The 3D package doesn't really make a difference in terms of texturing, since texturing is essentially a 2D process with some optional 3D bits (if you choose to use a 3D painting application).

To some extent I suppose, but each package treats texture setup in different ways.

I mean, the Hypershade for example is completely different to the Material Editor. Yes they both use the same terms for the same things but setting up a material in each is an entirely different process.

I guess I want to learn more about creating the material in Max as oppose to the UV/Mapping side of things, like setting up reflections, speculars, displacement etc. I know you can get great results just by experimenting with the settings but having a comprehensive understanding of all the aspects of a material setup I think would help a lot.

Then you're talking about something commonly known as "lookdev", not texturing. In a studio, they're two different departments. Texturing is quite specifically to do with creating texture maps, and that's about it. I work as a texture painter, and I don't work with Maya, or indeed any 3D package that the studio uses, at all, because we texture painters don't work with materials, only maps.

Ah I see.

Yes I'm talking more about the creation of materials as oppose to the maps.

I have in fact found some really good tutorials on Vismasters, they're geared towards Vray materials but useful nonetheless.

By the way...

Hi there,

I've been working with 3D for a few years now and while I've primarily worked in C4D, I have recently been learning to use 3DS Max.

3D Buzz has some very good texturing training for 3D Max in one of their series

MS - Max Fundamentals - Project 3 - the "baby dragon blowing out his first birthday cake & setting everything on fire" tutorial series. the authors go pretty deep into Max texturing.

There is a texturing DVD from Gnomon thats been out for a while that is really good.

Thats using max, zbrush and photoshop, I would definitely recommend it if you're looking for a good tutorial, it is very thorough :)
