The first commit may not sound like much but it's an important first step to not only clean up Blender's aging raytracer code, but also speed up the raytracer significantly as well. For those who don't use Blender's raytracer because of it's slow speed, then this project is one to watch.
Jaguarandi has already done the successful shrinkwrap modifier project in last year's GSoC, so no reason to be skeptical of his ability to do this, it remains to be seen how useful this will be for project Durian slated to start around the end of the GSoC season.
The second commit is more technical, but shows the raytracer is being cleaned up and dusted off just like a lot of the BGE code has been recently.
