Ok so Photoshop doesn't even open WMFs plus there's the fact that no-one uses them anymore. Which is why I need to batch process about 4144 of the damn things - converting them to jpegs and reducing their width to 300 pixels wide.

Does anyone know of a program that could do this as a batch process for me?

File > Batch Conversion/Rename
Check "Use Advanced Options" and click "Set Advanced Options". There you'll be able to set up the width, which is what you need. Don't forget to check "Preserve Aspect Ratio" and "Use Resampling fcuntion".
