View Full Version : Modeling: cut or quickslice in percents?
JonStoll 07-17-2003, 09:54 AM Ok, I have been using max for some years now and had to do some modeling in xsi a while ago. In xsi you can select a bunch of edges and cut or divide them all at one time at a certain percentage of each edge. I know in max I can turn snap on and cut polys at a percent one by one but I would rather select a bunch of edges and cut them all at once at say... 45% of each selected edge length. If anyone knows a way I can do this or knows of a script or something that can do this that would be great. It is a very usefull tool when doing tons of modeling.
thanks guys
Jon

If you're using max 5, the function you're looking for is the Connect dialog under editable poly. If you're on max 4, then meshtools 2.5 has that same function.
but they don't work exactly as you described. you can split a whole row of edges into 2, 3, 4..etc equal segments.

Thanks snowfly!!!!, I have never paid any attention to that button I can't believe I have missed that this whole time. It doesn't let me do percentages but spliting it in half or thirds will do just fine. I do have max 5 and the percentage thing would be cool but hey what can you do.
Thanks again Snowfly

hey guys, great thread!
I am just wondering about how exactly can I link 4 morphers or more to one single joystick? I saw many demos, but can somebody please give me a quick tour on how to doing so:buttrock: Thanks!
Hi,
Check out poovsaw from Grant Adam, not good for cutting around corners but will work on parallel edges...

if you use the mesh tools creatively you can do quite a bit.
example. you have a box (editible poly) with 6 polys which u want to carve up in certain percentages, say one horiz division 20% above the base.
select one vertical edge. hit ring. u will then have all the vertical edges.
hit connect and choose 4. this i will divide those polys by 'connecting' the vert edges with horiz edges. u nowshould have your box carved up into 5 vertical segments, each at 20% of the whole.
then its just a matter of removing the other edges/verts.
select the top 4 horiz. edges, hit loop, then right click to get the quad menu and select convert to vertices (converts the selection).
go back to edge selection and hit backspace to remove the edges without deleting any polys. then go to vertex selection and hit backspace again to delete the extra verts associated with the egdes you just removed.
it might sound long winded, but once you pick it up, the ring, loop and connect fuctions can be great for carving up models.
hope that helps and happy vertex pushing.
